History
Thrivent describes itself as the original purpose-based company, member-owned and founded more than a century ago when neighbors came together to insure each other. In 1902, five-hundred founding members contributed $5 each to mutually support one another, and Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) was born. In 1905, AAL expanded to serve women, 15 years before women were allowed to vote in the U.S. Lutheran Brotherhood (LB) was founded in 1917 and later merged with AAL to form Thrivent in 2002. Over the decades the founding organizations added products: in 1931 Lutheran Brotherhood introduced a loan program for churches and farms; in 1958 AAL began to offer annuities; in 1962 Lutheran Brotherhood introduced health insurance; in 1970 Lutheran Brotherhood became the first fraternal benefit society to introduce mutual funds; in 1983 AAL sold more universal life certificates than any other U.S. insurer; in 1987 Lutheran Brotherhood launched long-term-care products and AAL began offering banking services, with AAL becoming the 25th largest life insurance organization in the U.S.; in 1995 AAL mutual funds hit $2 billion in assets. In 2002, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans began operations after the merger of Lutheran Brotherhood and Aid Association for Lutherans. In 2010 Thrivent created Thrivent Choice, described as the only financial services organization to offer such a program. In 2012 Thrivent was named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere for the first time and has been recognized every year since.
