Overview
Thrikkakara Municipality is a local self-government body in Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. It was upgraded from a panchayat to a municipality in 2010. The municipality is bordered by Edathala Panchayat and Kalamassery Municipality to the north, Vadavucode and Puthankurishu Panchayats and Thrippunithura Municipality to the south, Vadavucode, Puthankurishu, Kunnathunad and Kizhakkambalam Panchayats to the east, and Kochi Corporation to the west. The region has historical and cultural significance, associated with the legend of Mahabali and the Onam festival. It is believed that the name Thrikkakara derives from 'Thrikkal' (sacred foot) and 'kara' (land), referring to the footprint of Vamana. The area developed significantly after the district headquarters was established in Kakkanad, which is now part of the municipality. The growth was further accelerated by the establishment of Infopark in Kakkanad. The Ernakulam Civil Station, district panchayat headquarters, and Public Service Commission district office are located in Kakkanad. The Seaport-Airport Road connecting Nedumbassery Airport and Cochin Port passes through the middle of the municipality. Agriculture was traditionally the main occupation, but the proximity of Cochin Refineries and Bharat Petroleum in Irumpanam has provided employment opportunities. The municipality is home to the ancient Thrikkakara Appan Temple, several educational institutions such as Model Engineering College, Bharat Mata College, Bharat Mata Business School, and Rajagiri Engineering College, and industries including Infopark with around 40 companies, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), Cochin Special Economic Zone, Doordarshan Kendra, and Akashvani Kendra.
History
Thrikkakara was originally a panchayat and was upgraded to a municipality in 2010. The area has deep cultural and historical roots, linked to the legend of Mahabali and the Onam festival. According to lore, Thrikkakara was the kingdom of Mahabali, and the name is derived from the footprint of Vamana (Thrikkal meaning sacred foot and kara meaning land). The region remained largely undeveloped until the district headquarters was established in Kakkanad, which spurred growth. The establishment of Infopark in Kakkanad further accelerated development. Today, the municipality hosts several government offices, educational institutions, and industries, and is well-connected by the Seaport-Airport Road.
