Thorogood's history traces back to 1892, when Albert Weinbrenner, a first-generation German immigrant who had begun apprenticing at age 13, took over his father's cobbler shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The small business catered to the city's workers and tradespeople, and Albert pursued a vision for "job-fitted" footwear. The "Job-fitted" concept was first introduced in 1917, creating footwear individualized for a wide range of jobs. The company took its first steps into safety footwear in 1938. Another defining moment was the creation of the Official Boy Scout Boot, the Hike n' Camp, in 1964. During WWI, Weinbrenner was a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army, and in 1942 during WWII it converted to all-military footwear for the duration of the war. In 2001, Weinbrenner donated and shipped 500 pairs of work boots to Ground Zero after the September 11 terror attacks for those working in the rubble. The brand has expanded to three Wisconsin factories and beyond, and remains committed to crafting footwear in Wisconsin since 1892.
