Overview

THK Intechs Co., Ltd. (THKインテックス株式会社) is a Japanese engineering company headquartered in the Shibaura district of Minato-ku, Tokyo, and a wholly owned subsidiary of THK Co., Ltd., the linear-motion and mechatronics group. The company positions itself as an engineering partner for manufacturing floors, combining ultra-precision and high-accuracy machining, inspection and measurement, and electrification to solve production-process problems. Its stated mission is to eliminate the "stopping, variation, and labor intensity" that trouble production sites, raising quality and productivity at the same time, and to support customers from concept through implementation. The business is organized around three pillars. The Unit Business supplies precision drive stages and custom units — high-precision single-axis units, theta-axis units, large XY-axis units, thin large XY-axis units, XY precision gantry units, and XY-axis units — combining mechanical, electrical, and control engineering to match a customer's equipment specification. The FA & Robot Business draws on accumulated application experience to guide customers toward "successful automation," including the sale of humanoid robots and autonomous mobile robots. The Textile Machinery Business continues a heritage that reaches back to the company's origins as a knitting-machine maker. The company's roots lie in Daito Seiki Co., Ltd. (大東製機株式会社), established in 1949 as a spin-off from Daito Boseki Co., Ltd. and initially operating in Shimizu Village, Shizuoka Prefecture. It manufactured rib-knitting sock machines from 1950, briefly produced DSK-brand motorcycles from 1953 until a factory fire ended that line in 1957, and later built circular knitting machines for sweaters and socks, including what it describes as the world's first computer group-controlled electronic pattern double-jersey circular knitting machine in 1973. It listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1962. A capital and business tie-up with THK Co., Ltd. followed in 1985, and in 2004 the company was delisted and became a wholly owned THK subsidiary through a share exchange. In 2009 it merged with THK group company Verdex Co., Ltd. and adopted the name THK Intechs Co., Ltd. Today THK Intechs operates manufacturing sites including the Sendai and Mishima plants, with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications at major sites, and has moved its headquarters several times within Tokyo, most recently to Shibaura in 2017. It sells the NEXTAGE humanoid robot (manufactured by Kawada Robotics) since 2013 and began selling autonomous mobile robots (AMR, AGF) in 2020. The company is led by President and Representative Director Motohiro Uemura, who frames its offering not as mere hardware but as solutions that create productivity, labor savings, quality, and safety value for customers.

History

THK Intechs traces its history to Daito Seiki Co., Ltd. (大東製機株式会社), established in 1949 as a spin-off from Daito Boseki Co., Ltd. with capital of 3 million yen, beginning operations in Tamagawa, Shimizu Village, Shizuoka Prefecture. In 1950 it manufactured and sold rib-knitter sock knitting machines. In 1953 it began manufacturing the DSK motorcycle; production of the DSK was halted in 1957 after the factory burned down, by which time 2,368 units of 250cc and 275 units of 500cc machines had been built. The company listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1962. In 1965 it manufactured and sold circular sweater knitting machines, and in 1973 it manufactured and sold what it describes as the world's first computer group-controlled electronic pattern double-jersey circular knitting machine. In 1976 it produced electronic individually controlled circular sweater knitting machines, and in 1987 computer-controlled single-cylinder sock knitting machines. A capital and business tie-up with THK Co., Ltd. was formed in 1985, marking the company's integration into the THK orbit. In 1987 the head office moved to Higashi-Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo. The Osaka sales office and Nara branch office opened in 1988, the same year the Sendai plant began operations. The Nagoya sales office opened in 1989, and in 1990 the Tokyo sales office was separated from the head office and relocated to Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Capital was increased to 4,255,005,000 yen in 1992. The Mishima plant's Talk Plaza was newly built in 1993, and the Sendai plant office building was added in 1994. The head office moved to Nishi-Gotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, in 1996. In 1999 the Mishima plant's new office building was completed with a seismic-isolation structure, and ISO 9001 certification was obtained for the Mishima and Sendai plants. The Mishima plant development building was completed in 2000, and the Matsumoto plant began operations in 2001. ISO 9001 certification was obtained for the Matsumoto office in 2004. Also in 2004, the company was delisted from the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and became a wholly owned subsidiary of THK Co., Ltd. through a share exchange. In 2005, with business transferred to THK Co., Ltd., the Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya sales offices were closed. The Sendai plant's D building was completed in 2007, and capital was reduced to 100,000,000 yen in 2008. In 2009 the company integrated its business with THK group company Verdex Co., Ltd. and changed its name to THK Intechs Co., Ltd.; the head office moved to Toyotama-Kita, Nerima-ku, Tokyo, the same year. The Matsumoto plant was closed in 2010. In 2013 the company began selling the Kawada Robotics humanoid robot NEXTAGE, and obtained ISO 14001 certification for the Mishima and Sendai plants. A showroom named "Risokata" displaying NEXTAGE opened in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, in 2015 and moved to Chiryu, Aichi Prefecture, in 2016, the year ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification was obtained for the head office. The head office moved to Shibaura, Minato-ku, Tokyo, in 2017. In 2020 the company began selling autonomous mobile robots (AMR, AGF), and in 2024 the Sendai plant's E building was completed. Across this history the company evolved from a textile-machinery maker into a precision-engineering and automation supplier within the THK Group, while retaining a textile machinery business. Its current president and representative director is Motohiro Uemura, who describes the company's purpose as supporting customers' production floors through the design and manufacture of production equipment, various automation devices, and unit products, and as delivering solutions that create productivity, labor savings, quality, and safety value.
