Overview
Thier-Galerie is a shopping centre in the city centre of Dortmund, Germany, located on the site of the former Dortmunder Thier-Brauerei (Thier brewery). It is operated by the Hamburg-based ECE Projektmanagement. The centre opened in 2011 and has direct access to the Westenhellweg, one of Germany's most frequented shopping streets. It attracts around 35,000 visitors daily, with peaks of up to 90,000 on Advent Saturdays, and serves a catchment area of about 2.3 million people. The centre offers approximately 33,000 square metres of retail space across three and a half sales levels, plus 4,800 square metres for offices and practices. It houses around 160 shops and employs roughly 1,000 people. The project cost is estimated at 300 million euros. Parking is available on several levels above the retail floors, with 730 spaces on the third, fourth and fifth floors. Thier-Galerie is known for its 'house-in-house' architectural concept: a free-standing triangular building in the centre of the complex, connected by bridges to the other parts. The former administration building of the brewery was preserved, while the former Brinkmannhaus on Westenhellweg was demolished and reconstructed in detail with a new outdoor terrace. The centre has nine levels in total: two basement floors, ground floor and six upper floors including the top floor, plus a large outdoor terrace. Access is via Hoher Wall, Silberstraße and Westenhellweg. In 2012, the centre was awarded the Across Award as the most innovative new shopping centre. The centre is managed by Center Manager Torben Seifert. It offers a range of services including a baby changing room, barrier-free toilets, a defibrillator, DHL Packstation, ATM, kid car rental, customer information, massage chairs, Amazon Locker, wheelchair rental and toilets. The centre also hosts events, such as circus-themed activities and blood donation drives, and features beehives on its roof producing honey. The centre's gift cards are accepted in many shops. Thier-Galerie positions itself as a modern shopping destination that blends modernity with history in the heart of Dortmund.
History
The Thier-Galerie shopping centre was built on the site of the former Dortmunder Thier-Brauerei in the city centre of Dortmund. Over a period of more than 15 years, the brewery's retreat from the city centre left a 22,000 square metre brownfield site within the Wallring, flanked by two existing buildings: the Brinkmannhaus and the former Thier administration building. The area had a well-developed bar and disco scene with a large catchment area extending into the Dortmund suburbs. As early as 1994, initial planning considerations for a redevelopment of the Thier area existed. An investor wanted to build an experience centre there, but these plans were soon discarded. After project developers and the city of Dortmund agreed in 2008 on an appropriate number of retail spaces compatible with the Westenhellweg shopping street, the last tenants moved out of the Brinkmannhaus at the end of August 2009. By December 2009, it was demolished and the entire area was prepared for the new building. The shopping centre opened in 2011. The retail space is spread over three and a half sales levels. The project cost is estimated at 300 million euros. There are several parking levels above the retail floors with 730 parking spaces on the third, fourth and fifth floors. The centre is located in the south-western part of Dortmund's city centre, between Westenhellweg, Hoher Wall, Martinstraße and Brinkoffstraße. Nearby are Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, Theater Dortmund and connections to Westenhellweg and Hansaplatz. The area borders the following streets: Martinstraße, Potgasse, Silberstraße, Hövelstraße and Hoher Wall. The centre is accessible by Stadtbahn at the stops Kampstraße, Reinoldikirche, Westentor or Stadtgarten with lines U41, U42, U43, U44, U45, U46, U47, U49. With S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S4, S5, the centre can be reached via Hauptbahnhof and Stadthaus stations, as well as with the night express NE7 (stop Martinstraße/Thier-Galerie). There are also 730 parking spaces in the Thier-Galerie. Architecturally, only the former administration building of the brewery was completely preserved; the former Brinkmannhaus on Westenhellweg was completely demolished but reconstructed in detail and with a new outdoor terrace. An architectural speciality of the Thier-Galerie is the house-in-house concept: a free-standing triangular building was erected in the middle of the complex, connected by bridges to the other building parts. The shopping centre is designed with nine levels, including two basement floors, the ground floor and, with the top floor, a total of six upper floors, plus a large outdoor terrace. The entrances are at Hoher Wall, Silberstraße and Westenhellweg. In 2012, the centre was awarded the Across Award as the most innovative new shopping centre. Access to the parking decks and deliveries is via a ramp system in Hövelstraße and Martinstraße. An additional, smaller delivery area is in Potgasse. As traffic-related conversion measures, the widening of Grafenhof and Hövelstraße, a roundabout at the connection of Martinstraße to Silberstraße and another roundabout in the Kolpingstraße/Hövelstraße area were built. The centre is operated by the Hamburg-based ECE Projektmanagement. It has around 160 shops and employs roughly 1,000 people. Daily visitor numbers are around 35,000, with peaks up to 90,000 on Advent Saturdays. The total catchment area is 2.3 million people. The centre offers a wide range of services and hosts various events, including blood donation drives and seasonal promotions. The current Center Manager is Torben Seifert.
