Overview
Thier Brewery (Brauerei Thier), also known as Thier-Brauerei or Dortmunder Thier-Brauerei, is a German beer brand with roots in Dortmund dating back to the mid-19th century. It was founded on 2 July 1854 by the Dortmund merchants Wilhelm von Hövel, Gustav Thier and Heinrich Sonnenschein as 'Brauerei von Hövel, Thier & Co.' The founding is regarded as a consequence of the introduction of bottom-fermented brewing and the rise of the Dortmund export style. In 1875 the Thier family took over all company shares, and after Gustav Thier's death in 1883 the business was led by his son Gustav Thier junior and his son-in-law Ludwig Freiherr Spiegel von und zu Peckelsheim, and renamed 'Brauerei Thier & Co.' In 1888 the Dortmund entrepreneur Josef Cremer acquired the company from his nephews. For much of the 20th century the brewery operated as Privatbrauerei Thier GmbH, later Brauerei Thier GmbH & Co., and became known for its early commitment to sports sponsorship; the local athletics club and former handball Bundesliga team OSC Dortmund at times carried the name OSC Thier Dortmund. In 1992 the Dortmund Thier-Brauerei, then led by Peter Cremer, was taken over by local rival Kronen Privatbrauerei Dortmund. In 1996 it was acquired by Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB), part of the Radeberger Gruppe of Dr. August Oetker KG, and production was moved to the DAB site in northern Dortmund. 'Thier Pils' continued to be brewed by DAB. On 31 July 2015 bottle filling was discontinued, so the brand is now available only as draught beer in selected pubs and restaurants. To preserve the traditional brand, a fan club called 'THIERfreunde Dortmund' was founded in October 2015. The brewery's former administration building at Hiltropwall is now used by the city of Dortmund, while the production buildings behind it were demolished in 2009 for the new Thier-Galerie shopping centre developed by ECE Projektmanagement. Through the former brewery administration entrance one can still reach the Thier-Galerie; on the ground floor is the Hövels Hausbrauerei with gastronomy, where Hövels Original is still brewed today. The brand remains a nostalgic symbol of Dortmund's brewing heritage.
History
The Thier Brewery was founded on 2 July 1854 by the Dortmund merchants Wilhelm von Hövel, Gustav Thier and Heinrich Sonnenschein as 'Brauerei von Hövel, Thier & Co.' Its establishment is seen as a consequence of the introduction of bottom-fermented brewing and the Dortmund export beer style. In 1875 the Thier family acquired all company shares. After Gustav Thier's death in 1883, the firm was initially led by his son Gustav Thier junior and his son-in-law Ludwig Freiherr Spiegel von und zu Peckelsheim, and the name was changed to 'Brauerei Thier & Co.' In 1888 the Dortmund entrepreneur Josef Cremer took over the company from his nephews. The brewery operated as Privatbrauerei Thier GmbH, and under the brewer-owner and co-owner Walter Cremer (born in Dortmund in 1913) as Brauerei Thier GmbH & Co. It engaged early in sports sponsorship; the local athletics club and former handball Bundesliga team OSC Dortmund at times bore the name OSC Thier Dortmund. In 1992 the Dortmund Thier-Brauerei, led by Peter Cremer (1943–2026), was taken over by local competitor Kronen Privatbrauerei Dortmund. In 1996 it was acquired by Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei (DAB), part of the Radeberger Gruppe, and production was relocated to the DAB site in northern Dortmund. 'Thier Pils' continued to be brewed by DAB. As of 31 July 2015 bottle filling ceased, leaving the brand available only as draught beer in some pubs. In October 2015 a fan club, the 'THIERfreunde Dortmund', was founded to preserve the traditional brand. The brewery's administration building and production facilities were located within the former ramparts of Dortmund. The administration building at Hiltropwall is now used by the city of Dortmund. The production buildings behind it were demolished in 2009 for the new Thier-Galerie shopping centre by ECE Projektmanagement. Through the former brewery administration entrance one can still reach the Thier-Galerie; on the ground floor is the Hövels Hausbrauerei with gastronomy, where Hövels Original is still brewed today.
