Overview

Theod. Mahr Söhne GmbH is a medium-sized German building-services engineering company based in Aachen, active in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, sanitation and refrigeration technology. It describes itself as the oldest heating company in Germany, tracing its origins to 1 March 1841, when the locksmith Hubert Theodor Mahr founded the Ofenschlosserei Mahr. The business has remained in the hands of the Mahr family and is now run by the sixth generation. It is an independent firm that is not tied to any particular manufacturer or system technology, which allows it to select the best solution from a wide range of systems and components for each project. The company's historic core competence is church heating. It developed central warm-air heating systems in the nineteenth century and became a specialist in heating large, high, niche-filled church interiors with extensive glazing and high air-exchange rates. Modern church heating must control not only temperature but also humidity, so that organs, paintings, wood carvings and sculptures are protected from condensation. Mahr has installed church heating systems in Germany and the Benelux countries as well as in other European countries including Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Italy and France. Its portfolio also covers climate technology, sanitation and solar technology, and it serves private households, industry and commerce, and heritage buildings. Beyond standard building services, Mahr plans and installs special systems, for example test benches for rollers, engines and batteries for the automotive industry. The company offers planning, installation, maintenance and service, and its Europe-wide team of trained master craftsmen and technicians supports clients throughout the lifecycle of their installations. According to its own figures it employs around 195 people, making it one of the largest specialists for heating, climate and ventilation technology in North Rhine-Westphalia; the German Wikipedia entry cites approximately 160 employees. The firm opened a branch in Cossebaude near Dresden in 1992 and has continued to combine tradition with modern, energy-conscious solutions.

History

Theod. Mahr Söhne GmbH was founded on 1 March 1841 by the master locksmith Hubert Theodor Mahr as the Ofenschlosserei Mahr in Aachen. In 1850 the founder brought his first warm-air heating system to market. The company developed the central warm-air heating segment, with which it also became active abroad. From the twentieth century onward it specialised above all in church heating, and in 1909 it installed its 2,000th company-built central heating apparatus in St. Josef Church in Düsseldorf. By 1936 more than two thousand church heating systems had been installed, including in more than 15 cathedral buildings. By the company's 100th anniversary in 1941, the number of air-heating units installed had risen to 6,500. In the 1970s the firm expanded its portfolio by building one of the first Aachen solar installations at its own premises in Aachen. In 1992 a branch was opened in Cossebaude near Dresden. The company has remained family-owned and is now led by the sixth generation of the Mahr family. It describes itself as the oldest heating company in Germany and continues to serve churches, heritage buildings, private households, and industrial and commercial clients with heating, climate, ventilation, sanitation, solar and refrigeration technology, as well as special systems such as automotive test benches.
