Overview
Theater Fifty-Fifty is a private theatre in Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany, dedicated primarily to cabaret but also hosting concerts, author readings and comedy shows. It was opened in 1989 and is operated by the non-profit association Theater Fifty-Fifty e.V. The theatre's costs are covered through the association, sponsors, ticket revenues and volunteer staff. Its founder and current artistic director is Andreas Büeler, a Swiss musician and patron of the arts. The venue began in the late 1980s in a converted disused goods-station shed of Erlangen's freight yard, with roughly 50 seats. Significant parts of the building incorporate the listed city wall of the Huguenot town of Erlangen. Strong local acceptance and the central location quickly gave the theatre a cult status in the small-arts scene, so that already in the early 1990s a new-build-quality expansion of the venue 'right around the corner' and a move to the upper floor of the neighbouring building became possible. A large number of now highly regarded artists — among them Ingo Appelt, Totales Bamberger Cabaret, Lizzy Aumeier, Matthias Egersdörfer, Torsten Goods and Claus von Wagner — played their first performances there. Today, with 150 to 200 shows per year, Theater Fifty-Fifty is the third-largest regularly programmed cultural venue in Erlangen after the Theater Erlangen and the Markgrafentheater. On 20 January 2016, for example, the €5,000 Kulturpreis der Stadt Erlangen (Cultural Prize of the City of Erlangen) was awarded there by Lord Mayor Florian Janik. The cultural scene at the Fifty-Fifty receives only occasional and very limited public subsidies; several local service providers handle catering for both the artists and the guests. When demand is strong, events are occasionally relocated from the Fifty-Fifty to the E-Werk, the Redoutensaal or the nearby Neustädter Kirche. The theatre offers table seating, with reservations possible for groups of six or more and for association members.
History
Theater Fifty-Fifty was established in the late 1980s in a converted disused goods-station shed of the Erlangen freight yard, initially with about 50 spectator seats. Significant parts of the building consist of the listed city wall of the Huguenot town of Erlangen. High acceptance among the population and the central location of the venue quickly helped the theatre achieve cult status in the small-arts scene, so that already in the early 1990s a new-build-quality expansion of the venue 'right around the corner' and a move to the upper floor of the neighbouring building became possible. The theatre was opened in 1989 and is run by the Förderverein Theater Fifty-Fifty e.V. A large number of today highly esteemed artists, such as Ingo Appelt, Totales Bamberger Cabaret, Lizzy Aumeier, Matthias Egersdörfer, Torsten Goods and Claus von Wagner, among many others, played their first performances there.
