Overview
Theater Drehleier is a small-arts and cabaret stage (Kleinkunstbühne) in Munich, Germany. It was founded in 1976 by Beppi Bachmair, Uwe Kleinschmidt and Werner Winkler at Balanstraße 23, and was initially run jointly by the three founders before Werner Winkler took over sole leadership. The venue takes its name from the hurdy-gurdy (Drehleier), a musical instrument built by Wolfram Kunkel, a musician and friend of Werner Winkler. Over the decades the Drehleier became a fixture of the Munich cabaret scene. Its stage hosted well-known German-language performers such as Hannes Wader, Willy Michl and Konstantin Wecker, as well as Bill Ramsey, the Spider Murphy Gang, Peter Horton, Jörg Hube, Sigi Schwab, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung, Biermösl Blosn, Unterbiberger Hofmusik, BAP, Truck Stop, Gebrüder Blattschuss and Gerhard Polt, among others. It has also served as a springboard for emerging artists from the cabaret, music and theatre scenes. In 1977 Werner Winkler founded the venue's own house ensemble, the Varieté Spectaculum. The 1987 programme was performed 74 times in a row, and by 2003 twenty-five programmes of this Munich suburban revue had been created. In 2011 Werner Winkler received the Cabaret Prize of the City of Munich for his wide-ranging commitment. When the building owner carried out extensive renovation work in 1997, the Drehleier had to move to Rosenheimer Straße 123. In 2021 Manuela Hoffmann, Werner Winkler's long-time colleague, took over the leadership of Theater Drehleier. The venue continues to operate as a private Munich stage, with its website operated under Drehleier Gaststätte GmbH.
