Overview

The Times Group, formally Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL), is one of India's largest privately held media conglomerates. Based in Mumbai, the group is best known for The Times of India, an English-language daily that developed from the Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce, first published in 1838. Its portfolio subsequently expanded across national and regional newspapers, business journalism, magazines, television, radio, digital publishing and internet-based services. The newspaper that became The Times of India passed through several ownership and editorial changes during the nineteenth century. It became a daily in 1850, was consolidated with other publications in 1859, and adopted the title The Times of India in 1861. In 1892, Thomas Jewell Bennett and Frank Morris Coleman acquired the newspaper through the newly formed Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., giving the company the corporate identity that remains associated with the group. The business changed hands again during the period surrounding Indian independence. Industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia acquired the company from its British owners in the 1940s. The financing of the acquisition later became the subject of parliamentary scrutiny, an inquiry and criminal proceedings. During Dalmia's legal difficulties, operational control was entrusted to his son-in-law Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain. The Jain family subsequently secured ownership and became the controlling family behind BCCL. Under the Jain family, The Times Group broadened its geographic reach through new publications and local editions. Its print portfolio came to include The Economic Times, Navbharat Times, Maharashtra Times, Mumbai Mirror, Vijaya Karnataka and city-focused Mirror and Times titles. The group also built a substantial magazine business, including Filmfare and Femina, while a number of historically important magazines were eventually discontinued during financial retrenchment in the 1990s. The company later pursued more profitable broadcast, radio and digital businesses. Television assets included Times Now and related news and business channels, while Radio Mirchi became a nationwide private FM network. Times Internet and Times Business Solutions extended the group into digital content, online classifieds, recruitment, real estate, matrimonial and technology-driven ventures. These activities made the organization more than a newspaper publisher, although its print brands remained central to its public identity and commercial influence. In May 2023, the group was restructured into two business entities associated with the brothers Vineet Jain and Samir Jain. Broadcast and radio assets remained with Vineet Jain, while print assets were placed under Samir Jain. The restructuring reflected the increasingly different operating models of the group's print and electronic-media businesses. The Times Group remains active in India, with a portfolio spanning mass-market news, business information, entertainment, regional publishing, radio, television and digital services.

History

The origins of The Times Group lie in the Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce, whose first issue appeared on 3 November 1838. Initially published twice a week, the newspaper became a daily in 1850. In 1859 it was combined with two other newspapers and appeared as the Bombay Times and Standard under editor Robert Knight. The title The Times of India was adopted in 1861, marking the beginning of the paper's development as a publication with national ambitions. Ownership changed several times before Thomas Jewell Bennett and Frank Morris Coleman acquired the newspaper in 1892 through Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. The company had a substantial workforce even at that stage and gradually consolidated its position in Indian English-language publishing. The newspaper and associated properties became known collectively as the Times of India Group. In the 1940s, industrialist Ramkrishna Dalmia acquired the company from its British owners. The transaction later attracted political and legal attention because of allegations concerning the movement of funds from financial institutions connected with Dalmia. In 1955, parliamentarian Feroze Gandhi raised the matter in Parliament. The Vivian Bose Commission subsequently investigated the transactions, and Dalmia was later convicted and sentenced to imprisonment, although much of his sentence was spent in hospital. During this period, his son-in-law Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain managed the company. Jain later resisted Dalmia's attempt to regain control and ultimately acquired the business, establishing the Sahu Jain family's long-term control. The group expanded after the change in ownership by developing new newspapers and regional editions. Its portfolio grew beyond The Times of India to include business journalism through The Economic Times, Hindi publishing through Navbharat Times, Marathi publishing through Maharashtra Times and Kannada publishing through Vijaya Karnataka. City newspapers and supplements such as Mumbai Mirror, Bangalore Mirror, Pune Mirror and Bombay Times strengthened the company's local advertising and readership presence. The Times Group also had an influential magazine tradition. It published titles including the Illustrated Weekly of India, Filmfare, Femina, Dharmyug, Sarika, Dinaman and Parag. Several magazines carried the work of prominent Indian editors and writers. However, changing economics and financial pressures led to the closure of many of these publications during the 1990s. The group’s sons, Sahu Samir Jain and Vineet Jain, are credited with helping restore financial performance through commercially stronger products and expansion into newer media. During the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the group diversified into television, radio and the internet. Times Now became a prominent television news brand, while Radio Mirchi developed into a national private FM network. Times Internet built and operated digital products and invested in internet businesses. Times Business Solutions began with online recruitment and expanded into real estate, matrimonial and other classified-service categories. The group’s most recent structural turning point identified in the reference material occurred in May 2023, when its operations were divided between two entities associated with Vineet Jain and Samir Jain. Broadcast and radio properties were assigned to Vineet Jain, while print assets were assigned to Samir Jain. This separation reflected the different economics, regulatory environments and strategic priorities of print publishing and electronic media. The Times Group remains an active Indian media organization with interests across print, television, radio, magazines and digital services.
