Overview

The Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB) is a Nigerian professional association and advocacy body for people working in, or retired from, the broadcasting industry. According to its official website, the idea of forming the society dates back to 1962 and was initiated by the late Ambassador Segun Olushola. In 1978 the effort was handed over to Mr. Yemi Farounbi, now Ambassador Yemi Farounbi. The Society was formally registered with Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission on 3 March 1994, with its headquarters at NTA, Victoria Island, Lagos. It describes itself as a platform and source of inspiration for both serving and retired broadcasters, and as a think-tank on broadcasting and related matters. Its stated vision is to serve as an advocacy body for the broadcast industry in Nigeria, while its mission is to lay down standards of knowledge, training and experience in the art, science and techniques of broadcasting appropriate to the various grades of membership. The Society's objectives include monitoring and controlling the conduct of the practice of the broadcasting profession, advocacy for the industry, conducting examinations and awarding certificates or diplomas, prescribing standards of knowledge and skills, and the formal admission, certification and registration of persons seeking to become broadcasting practitioners. Membership is open to current or former staff in programmes, news, engineering or other specified departments of a broadcasting organisation, with a minimum of a diploma certificate from a recognised higher institution; there are grades including Fellow and Full Member. In 2013, on the basis of recommendations, the Society was transferred to the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) to help nurture the organisation. The Society has pursued a Bill before Nigeria's National Assembly to provide for the regulation and conduct of the practice of the broadcasting profession in Nigeria; the bill has passed first and second readings. In August 2024, members elected Professor Umaru Pate, Vice Chancellor, as the Society's pioneer president alongside other executives.
