History

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation was established in September 1986 as a private non-profit grant-making foundation with contributions from The Nippon Foundation and the motorboat racing industry. Since then it has promoted various activities aimed at contributing to human welfare, the sound development of the international community, and world peace through international understanding, international exchange, and international cooperation. In October 2011 it received certification to transition to a public interest incorporated foundation. Thereafter, in the fields of international exchange and international cooperation, it has carried out activities centered on general projects approaching individual issue areas and four funds addressing region-specific problem solving: the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund, the Sasakawa Pan-Asia Fund, the Sasakawa Middle East Islam Fund, and the Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund, conducting research, human resource development, inviting persons, and holding international conferences. The Ocean Policy Research Foundation was established in 1975 to promote the shipbuilding industry and related industries, later expanding and strengthening its research to the oceans broadly. In 2002 it created the SOF Ocean Policy Research Institute. In July 2013 a joint research committee including outside experts was set up to discuss the future direction of the foundations' activities. In April 2015, after resolutions by both foundations' boards of directors and councils, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation became the surviving entity in a merger, starting as one of Asia's leading public interest incorporated foundations with total assets of 142.6 billion yen. After the merger it set a Mission Statement as a new social mission, and the project experience of the former Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the research, survey, and policy recommendation results built by the Ocean Policy Research Foundation as an ocean think tank were inherited and integrated into the Ocean Policy Research Institute.
