Overview
The Nippon Corrosion Engineering Co., Ltd. (日本防蝕工業株式会社) is a Japanese specialist engineering company dedicated to corrosion control. Its roots trace to September 1947, when personnel from the machinery department of the former Mitsubishi Trading Company founded Nippon Polytechnic Industrial Works as a technical consulting firm introducing and coordinating domestic and foreign technologies. In April 1951, under the auspices of the 97th Corrosion Prevention Committee of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the corrosion-prevention technical division was spun off and the company was established as Japan's first and only specialist anti-corrosion engineering firm. The company's core business is cathodic protection (electrical anti-corrosion) and coating-based anti-corrosion, alongside seawater sterilization and marine biofouling prevention, and corrosion investigation and diagnosis services. It protects critical infrastructure in the electricity, gas and water sectors, road and railway facilities, and marine and port installations. Its product range includes galvanic anodes (aluminium alloy, zinc alloy, magnesium alloy and pure iron anodes), impressed-current electrodes (high-silicon iron, platinum-titanium and metal-oxide coated electrodes), remote monitoring and control systems for cathodic protection, corrosion and anti-corrosion monitoring kits, reference electrodes, and accessories such as insulating joints and terminals. It also offers seawater sterilization and anti-fouling products marketed under names such as "Kaki Clean" and "Sessile Guard Jr II." Manufacturing is centered on the Odawara Plant, where aluminium and zinc alloys are melted and composition-adjusted under ISO 9001-based control and cast into a wide variety of anodes using roughly 200 moulds; magnesium alloy anodes and durable electrodes are also produced or assembled there. Quality control relies on high-performance analytical instruments such as emission spectrometers, with integrated quality management from raw material to shipment. The company has accumulated more than half a century of cathodic protection experience and positions itself around contributing to the safety of society and daily life through superior anti-corrosion technology. It maintains a head office and branch/sales office network in Japan, publishes a technical information journal titled "Sabi" (Rust), and engages in activities such as coral restoration. Its official website is nitibo.co.jp.
History
The company's history begins in the aftermath of the Second World War. In September 1947, personnel connected with the machinery department of the former Mitsubishi Trading Company (旧三菱商事㈱機械部) founded Nippon Polytechnic Industrial Works (㈱日本ポリテクニク工業所, later renamed Nippon Polytechnic Industrial Office), a technical consulting firm whose purpose was to introduce, guide and coordinate domestic and foreign technologies. In July 1949, following the policy of the Japan Natural Gas Association to apply cathodic protection to natural gas wells in the Niigata area, the firm began joint research with the Tokyo Industrial Testing Laboratory and the association. Alongside this, an in-house specialist division for anti-corrosion technology was created. In April 1951, under the auspices of the 97th Corrosion Prevention Committee of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, that anti-corrosion technology division was made independent and The Nippon Corrosion Engineering Co., Ltd. was founded as Japan's first and only specialist anti-corrosion engineering company. In August 1953, the company received a research grant from the Ministry of Transport and the Japan Shipbuilding Research Association for the fiscal 1953 project "Cathodic Protection of Axial Flow Pumps," carried out jointly with Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries and Ebara Corporation. In April 1959, it obtained a non-exclusive patent licence from the former Mitsubishi Metal Corporation (now Mitsubishi Materials) for aluminium alloys for galvanic anodes. In October 1962, the Odawara Plant was completed and the company began producing various electrodes for anti-corrosion use. In October 1965, it obtained a non-exclusive patent licence from the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for zinc anodes containing aluminium for cathodic protection. In June 1975, a new pollution-free Odawara Plant was completed. In March 1988, the company provided technical cooperation jointly with two private companies in the joint research on "Cathodic Protection of Concrete Structures" led by the Ministry of Construction and the Public Works Research Centre. In May 1991, it developed a "rebar corrosion diagnostic meter" to assess the corrosion condition of reinforcing steel in concrete structures. In May 1992, the Ports and Harbours Bureau of the Ministry of Transport issued an evaluation certificate for its "non-destructive diagnostic system and repair method for reinforced concrete" under the rules for evaluating private-sector technology related to ports. In November 1999, the company obtained ISO 9002 certification, followed by ISO 9001 certification in October 2000. In March 2003, it renewed a quality assurance agreement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe Shipyard, and in October 2005 the Odawara Plant was certified (and continued to be certified) based on a quality audit by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Takasago Machinery Works. In the present day, the company continues to operate as a specialist anti-corrosion engineering firm headquartered in Tokyo, serving infrastructure sectors including electricity, gas and water, roads and railways, and marine and port facilities, and publishing technical information through its journal "Sabi."
