Overview

The Morrison-Clark Historic Inn & Restaurant is a boutique hotel and restaurant in downtown Washington, DC, occupying two adjoining townhouses built in 1864 at 1013 and 1015 L Street. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for an eclectic design that intermingles Victorian heritage with Chinese ecclesiastical atmospheres, alongside contemporary furnishings, antiques, and Carrara marble fireplaces. The original Morrison house at 1015 L Street was built for David Morrison, a developer who made his fortune selling flour and feed to the US government during the Civil War. The Clark house at 1013 L Street was built for Ruben B. Clark, a wealthy land investor, grocery store owner, director of the Anacostia and Potomac River Railroad, and Washington, DC Jail Commissioner. Over the following century the homes were occupied by prominent families and congressmen. Later, the Women's Army and Navy League took ownership and combined the two houses to create a haven for enlisted soldiers and officers. Today the Morrison-Clark operates as a contemporary hotel with beautifully restored rooms and suites featuring balconies, wall-mounted TVs, and free Wi-Fi. It offers modern American cuisine in its restaurant, cocktails in the Lobby Bar & Lounge, and unique indoor and outdoor event spaces including a landscaped courtyard. The hotel caters to both business travelers and vacationers, positioning itself as a fusion of Old World charm and modern amenities in a vibrant downtown neighborhood.

History

The Morrison-Clark Historic Inn & Restaurant traces its origins to two adjoining townhouses built in 1864 on L Street in downtown Washington, DC. The Morrison house at 1015 L Street was originally the home of David Morrison, one of DC's wealthiest merchants, who made his fortune selling flour and feed to the US government during the Civil War. When Mr. Morrison died in 1887, he willed the house and furnishings to Marie E. Byington, described as an "attentive, considerate and faithful friend." The Clark house at 1013 L Street was built for Ruben B. Clark, who became wealthy through land investments, owned a grocery store, served as Director of the Anacostia and Potomac River Railroad, and was Washington, DC's Jail Commissioner. He gave the house to his daughter Ida in 1880, who owned it for the next 50 years. Over the century and a half since the original structures rose to prominence, prominent families and congressmen called the homes their own, each leaving their indelible marks on the historic L Street properties. Later, the Women's Army and Navy League took ownership and combined the Morrison and Clark houses to create a haven for enlisted soldiers and officers. In the modern era, the property was transformed into a contemporary hotel that celebrates both new and old. Today's Morrison-Clark Historic Inn marries beautiful, historic architecture with modern design to pay homage to the original buildings' storied pasts. The hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a truly unique DC hotel experience immersed in the vibrant culture of downtown, with restored rooms and suites, a restaurant serving modern American cuisine, a Lobby Bar & Lounge, and unique indoor and outdoor spaces including a landscaped courtyard.
