Overview
The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation (Romanian: Fundația Regală Margareta a României, FRMR) is a Romanian non-governmental organization founded in 1990 by Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, together with her father, King Michael I of Romania. It describes itself as an elite non-governmental organization that supports children, young people and the elderly through sustainable intervention, based on sharing experience and values between generations. Its stated mission is to act as a catalyst for the development of human potential in the spirit of dignity, solidarity and the promotion of Romanian talent and cultural values. The Foundation develops and supports programmes that improve the living conditions of children, young people, families and elderly people in difficulty; stimulate solidarity between generations and create a bridge of communication between children, young people and the elderly; contribute to strengthening the institutional capacity of organizations and institutions working with children and the elderly; and cultivate local creativity and talent. It works with organizations, institutions, national and international companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises in order to pool resources, skills and talent from many fields of activity, and it seeks to stimulate volunteering and inspire community spirit in the communities where it is involved. Over more than three decades of work, the Foundation has developed a wide variety of sustainable projects in the areas of education, community development, civil society, health and culture, projects which, in its own words, have contributed to the spiritual and social renewal of Romania. Its activities are organized through an international network of six legally independent offices located in Romania, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and the United States. Her Majesty Margareta serves as President of the Board of Directors of each of the six offices, and all offices coordinate their activity and cooperate in order to mobilize as many resources as possible in support of beneficiaries in Romania. The Romanian office began operating in 1991, initially as a branch of the Swiss office, and acquired independent legal personality in 1998. Through the Bucharest office, the Foundation analyses local needs, develops and implements projects, establishes partnerships and maintains the link between all the Foundation's offices. The international offices in Geneva, London, Paris, Brussels and New York focus mainly on creating local partnerships and raising funds for the projects implemented in Romania, through grant applications and fundraising events. The Foundation is funded through donations, sponsorship and corporate social responsibility partnerships. On its sponsorship page it invites companies to direct up to 20% of corporation tax and 0.5% of turnover under a sponsorship contract, to become partners of a social or educational project, or to take part in volunteering actions. It is affiliated with networks such as the Romanian Donors' Forum (FDR) and the European Network of Central and Eastern European Countries (ECEN), the latter working on improving the quality of life of elderly people across seven countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
