Overview

The Huntsman is a Fuller's pub and restaurant in Bath, Somerset, England. It occupies a Grade II* listed building on Terrace Walk whose façade is described as the oldest shop-front in the city, with original keystones still intact. The building was constructed between 1748 and 1750 as the Terrace Walk Wine Vaults, originally run by a local wine merchant, and was designed by the architect John Wood the Elder, whose name is commemorated in the pub's upstairs Elder Rooms. It operated as an Eldridge Pope public house from as early as 1906 and was listed at Grade II* in 1950. In November 2012 the property was bought by the London family brewer Fuller, Smith & Turner, which refurbished it considerably. Today The Huntsman presents a blend of Georgian elegance and contemporary functionality, serving refined pub classics made from fresh, seasonal ingredients alongside a bar offering modern craft beers and cask classics. It provides private event and function spaces, including the Elder Rooms (up to 62 seated or 80 standing) and the Mezzanine (up to 30 seated or 40 standing), used for corporate events, weddings, celebrations and private dining. The pub is dog friendly, family friendly, has step-free access, free Wi-Fi, a real fire, comfy sofas and outside seating, and shows live sport. It is part of the Fuller's estate and participates in the Fuller's rewards and communications programme.

History

The building that houses The Huntsman was constructed between 1748 and 1750 as the Terrace Walk Wine Vaults, originally run by a local wine merchant. It was designed by the architect John Wood the Elder, who is known for designing many of the finest streets and buildings in Bath. The premises operated as an Eldridge Pope public house from as early as 1906, and the building was Grade II* listed in 1950. Early deeds confirm that the notable front shop has undergone change over the years, with the entrance moving from the right-hand end to the centre, although the intricate masonry detail around the arches has remained to the present day and is one of several iconic features that remind visitors of the history of the grand building. The Huntsman captures the prize for oldest shop-front in the city, with its original keystones still intact. In November 2012 the pub was bought by the London family brewer Fuller, Smith & Turner. After undergoing considerable refurbishment, it now boasts fine dining upstairs in the Elder Rooms, named after the building's architect, John Wood the Elder. Within The Huntsman, visitors find elegant sophistication and a tasteful balance of old and new design throughout. The pub offers a menu featuring refined pub classics crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients, and its bar serves modern craft beers and cask classics. It also provides private event and function spaces, including the Elder Rooms, which overlook the square and can host up to 62 seated or 80 standing, and the Mezzanine, which can host up to 40 standing or 30 seated. These spaces are used for corporate events, business meetings, weddings, celebrations and private dining. The Huntsman is part of the Fuller's estate and participates in the Fuller's rewards and communications programme.
