Overview

Krogen Stora Gungan (also known in English as The Hook Big Swing, Skansen) is a restaurant and café housed in a historic building at the Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm, Sweden. The building itself dates to 1801, when it was a tavern on the road to Dalarö, and it was moved to Skansen in 1969 and reopened as a restaurant in 1975. Today it sits in the museum's town quarter by Hyttorget and is operated by KC Wallberg. The restaurant serves traditional Swedish food rooted in the early 20th century, with a menu that includes classics such as Biff Rydberg, kroppkakor, raggmunk and pancakes with seasonal jam, alongside café items like sandwiches, cakes, buns and pies. The interior evokes an 1880s tavern, with a serving room and dining room furnished with pieces from old Stockholm company taverns, and a rustic loft-style party hall in the attic. Stora Gungan is open year-round and offers a traditional Christmas smörgåsbord in December.

History

The building that houses Krogen Stora Gungan was originally constructed in 1801 as a tavern on the road to Dalarö. In 1725, Stora Gungan became a tenant farm under the Enskede estate, and during the 18th century it served as a coaching inn for travellers on the Dalarö road. It is mentioned in one of Fredmans epistlar, suggesting that Carl Michael Bellman visited Stora Gungan. In 1801 the building was raised by one storey, and in 1808 the property was divided into Stora and Lilla Gungan, the latter located at Sandsborg and later demolished. In 1969, when the plot in Enskede was to be built on, Stora Gungan was donated to Skansen by the City of Stockholm. The house was dismantled and rebuilt in the town quarter, and was completed in 1975. In connection with the move, the later-added storey was removed, leaving the ground floor and attic. The ground floor is furnished as an 1880s tavern, with a serving room and dining room decorated with furniture from old Stockholm company taverns, predecessors of today's Systembolaget. The menu consists of very traditional Swedish food with roots in the early 20th century. In the attic there is a party hall furnished in a rustic loft style. Krogen Stora Gungan is open as a restaurant and café all year round, and in December it serves a truly traditional Christmas smörgåsbord. Today the restaurant is operated by KC Wallberg, and its menu is a gastronomic tribute to Swedish culinary history, offering unpretentious and additive-free food. The lunch menu features well-prepared classics such as Biff Rydberg, kroppkakor, raggmunk and pancakes with seasonal jam, as well as dishes with typical heritage ingredients such as naked oats and vendace. The café menu includes classic sandwiches and cakes, buns and pies according to season. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, as well as gluten- and milk-protein-free alternatives. KC Wallberg aims to create interest in Swedish culinary heritage and opportunities for interesting meal events and themed dinners for groups. The beverage list presents Swedish craft beer as well as sustainably produced quality wines.
