Overview
The Flicks is an independent movie theater, café and video rental shop located at 646 Fulton Street in downtown Boise, Idaho. It was opened on September 21, 1984 by Carole and Rick Skinner with a single screen, a café and a garden patio. Over the following decades it expanded to four screens (the second added in 1988, the third and fourth in 1997) and added a video/DVD rental shop in 1989. The cinema specializes in independent, foreign and art films, along with curated Hollywood movies, and is known for its in-theater dining, including signature salads, burgers, soups and desserts, as well as domestic, imported and micro-brewed beers and a selection of fine wines. The venue also includes an upstairs meeting room and a garden patio with a fountain. The Flicks has weathered competition from larger multiplex chains that opened and later closed in the Boise area, and in 2006 its right to continue serving beer and wine in its theaters, patio and dining room was upheld by the State Legislature. The theater remains locally owned and operated, and continues to show films on four screens with 192, 96, 58 and 42 seats. It offers assisted listening devices, closed captions and audio descriptions for select screenings, and has implemented a Phenomenal Aire air purification system. The Flicks also hosts live events on its patio and in its spaces, and its Rick's Cafe Americain serves food and drinks to patrons.
History
The Flicks opened on September 21, 1984, founded by Carole and Rick Skinner in downtown Boise, Idaho. The original venue consisted of one movie screen, a café and a patio. In 1988, a second screen was added, and in 1989 the Video Shop was introduced, expanding the business into home video rentals. The third and fourth screens were added in 1997, bringing the total to four auditoriums with 192, 96, 58 and 42 seats. Over the years, The Flicks faced competition from larger multiplex chains, including two Cineplex Odeon multiplexes added in 1988 (since closed), Reel Cinema multiplexes (closed during the pandemic), a Regal/Edwards 21-plex in 1997 and a Regal/Edwards 9-plex in 2005 (both now closed). In 2006, the State Legislature upheld the theater's right to continue allowing beer and wine in its theaters, patio and dining room. The Flicks remains locally owned and operated, and continues to show independent, foreign and art films, as well as curated Hollywood movies, on its four screens. It also operates Rick's Cafe Americain, offering a full menu, and hosts live events on its patio and in its spaces.
