The Box Plus Network

The Box Plus Network was a British television company focused primarily on music programming. It originated in 1992 as the Video Jukebox Network International, launching The Box as a cable television service built around music videos and viewer interest in the emerging music-video channel market. The business later became known as Box Television and, subsequently, The Box Plus Network. Its principal activities were the ownership, operation and distribution of branded music and entertainment channels rather than the production of a single general-interest television service. The Box developed a distinctive identity through its emphasis on music discovery and audience interaction. Its playlist-led format included viewer requests and, later, the First Play feature, which gave selected videos an early UK or international television premiere. Programming such as Box Fresh was used to present newer music and emerging artists. This helped distinguish the service from conventional music channels that concentrated mainly on established catalogue videos. During the late 1990s, the company was acquired by Emap, a publisher with a portfolio of media brands spanning magazines, radio and television. Under Emap, the business expanded beyond cable distribution and began broadcasting through satellite and digital terrestrial television. It also developed channels using brands associated with Emap's wider media portfolio, including Kiss, Kerrang!, Magic and Smash Hits. These services adapted their programming to different musical audiences, ranging from rock and alternative music to rhythmic genres, mainstream pop and easy-listening catalogue music. A major ownership change took place in 2007. Bauer Media acquired Emap's broadcasting operations, while Channel Four Television Corporation acquired a 50 percent interest in Box Television. The resulting joint venture combined Bauer's music and publishing brands with Channel 4's television infrastructure and programming capabilities. The network subsequently operated a portfolio that included The Box, Kiss, Magic, Kerrang! and 4Music, along with several channels that were later renamed, replaced or closed. The network broadened its distribution during the 2010s. On 2 April 2013, its channels became free-to-air on satellite, with 4Music remaining free-to-view rather than fully free-to-air. In 2017, the company launched a Box Plus app for connected televisions, streaming devices, game consoles and mobile platforms. The app offered live streams of network channels and catch-up content, reflecting the shift from linear television toward on-demand and multiscreen viewing. The company also experimented with international expansion, launching Box Africa in 2012 as a pan-African music channel available in 15 countries. Channel 4 acquired Bauer Media's remaining 50 percent stake on 8 January 2019, bringing The Box Plus Network under full Channel 4 ownership. In July of the same year, Box Plus operations were integrated into Channel 4's main business operations. The network later faced the wider structural and financial pressures affecting linear music television, including changing audience habits, online video competition and the consolidation of Channel 4's channel portfolio. Online streaming through the network's website and the 4Music player was removed on 16 November 2023. On 29 January 2024, Channel 4 announced that all remaining Box Plus channels would close as part of a broader programme of cuts. The Box, Magic, Kiss, 4Music and Kerrang! ceased broadcasting on 30 June 2024. The closure ended the operating life of the network as a multi-channel television company, although several of its brands had histories and identities extending beyond the Box Plus corporate structure.

The business began in 1992 as Video Jukebox Network International, operating The Box as a cable music-video service. Its early model was based on the growing popularity of dedicated music television and on audience participation through video requests. The Box later became associated with music discovery, particularly through its First Play feature, which presented selected videos before or around their wider UK exposure. Emap expanded its television presence and moved the service beyond its original cable base, using satellite and digital terrestrial distribution alongside other channels connected with Emap-owned brands. This period saw the development of a broader portfolio, including genre and audience propositions linked to Kiss, Kerrang!, Magic and Smash Hits. In 2007, Bauer Media acquired Emap's broadcasting operations. Channel Four Television Corporation simultaneously took a 50 percent share in Box Television, creating a joint venture between Bauer and Channel 4. The company subsequently operated as The Box Plus Network and combined music-video channels with selected general entertainment programming. Its portfolio included The Box, Kiss, Magic, Kerrang! and 4Music, as well as earlier or regional services such as The Hits, Q, Box Upfront, Box Hits and Box Africa. The network increased its satellite availability in 2013, when its channels became free-to-air on satellite except for 4Music, which remained free-to-view. It also pursued digital distribution. In 2017, the Box Plus app offered live channel streams and catch-up programming on platforms including Now TV, Roku, EE TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, iOS and Android. The company launched Box Africa in 2012, extending its music-channel model to 15 African countries; that service ceased broadcasting in late 2020. Channel 4 bought Bauer's remaining share on 8 January 2019. The Box Plus operations were then moved into Channel 4's main business structure in July 2019. Several portfolio changes followed. Q was replaced by Heat, later renamed Box Upfront, while the former Smash Hits service became Box Hits. The Hits was replaced by 4Music in 2008, and Box Hits itself was replaced by 4Music in 2022. 4Music increasingly returned to an all-music schedule after its entertainment programming was reduced. The company ultimately faced the decline of linear music television and the migration of music discovery toward online video platforms and streaming services. Streaming through the Box Plus website and the 4Music player ended in November 2023. Channel 4 announced in January 2024 that the remaining channels would close. The Box, Magic, Kiss, 4Music and Kerrang! all ended transmission on 30 June 2024, bringing the corporate network's active channel operation to a close.

Its programming covered urban, grime, electronic, dance, hip-hop and R&B music, with the precise emphasis changing over time. The channel adapted the Kiss identity also used by Bauer's radio operation and closed on 30 June 2024.

• MagicMusic television channel

  Magic specialized in accessible, easy-listening music videos, drawing heavily on songs from the 1970s through the 2000s. Its television identity was connected to Bauer's broader Magic brand, which also appeared in radio and recorded-music products. Magic remained part of the final channel group and closed on 30 June 2024.

• Kerrang!Rock music television channel

  Kerrang! focused on rock music and was associated with Bauer's Kerrang! magazine and radio brand. At various points its schedule consisted almost entirely of music videos, with viewer requests linked to playlist programming. The channel formed part of the final Box Plus portfolio and closed on 30 June 2024.

  Box Africa was a 24-hour music channel launched for audiences across Africa. It combined international music with programming from African markets and was distributed in 15 countries.
