Overview
The Black Swan is a Grade II* listed pub in York, North Yorkshire, England. Its official site describes it as a half-timbered pub with rooms dating from the 15th century, located a block from the River Foss, about a 10 minute walk from York Castle and a 5-10 minute walk from the Jorvik Viking Centre. It offers traditional rooms with en-suite bathrooms and antique four-poster beds, complimentary parking and breakfast, a wood-panelled restaurant with coffered ceilings and an open fireplace serving food daily, and two beer gardens. It hosts live music including folk, acoustic and jazz bands, and is home to The Black Swan Folk Club, which has run for over 40 years and was awarded Folk Club of the Year in 2009.
History
The Black Swan stands in Peasholme Green, an area once a water meadow used for growing peas. The pub dates back to the 15th century, when it was a private house, with alterations and additions made in the following two centuries. Prior to the present building, a medieval inn had stood on the site and remains may still be beneath the pub. It was built for William Bowes, a merchant and Sheriff of York in 1417, who also became Lord Mayor in 1428. For many years it was believed that a passageway ran under the road linking the pub to St Cuthbert's Church; in 2003 part of the floor was taken up during renovation work and electricians allegedly saw an old-style red brick floor receding in the direction of the church. Early photographs show two front doors side by side, suggesting the building may have been divided into two for a time. Later occupants include William Briggs, landlord in the late 19th century, and Fred Wright in the 1910s, when the Layerthorpe Cycling Club used the pub as its headquarters. The Black Swan is a Grade II* listed pub in York, North Yorkshire, England.
