History
The Bailey Theatre is a historic performing arts centre in Camrose, Alberta. It was built in 1911 and reopened in 2011 after extensive renovations. According to the theatre's history page, Camille David came to Camrose in the Spring of 1909 and in 1910 started building the David Theatre. The first documented show was staged on February 23, 1911. In 1919 David sold the theatre to Stan Bailey, who added the front 40 ft. lobby area and a 120-seat balcony completed in June 1922. The theatre began with vaudeville, moved to silent movies in the 1920s and 1930s, and showed its first 'talkie' with sound, 'Peacock Alley', in 1930. Around 1940 the façade was reconstructed to create a classic Art Deco appearance. The theatre was initially built without a balcony and no front lobby; when the front portion was built in 1921, the balcony and curved stairs were added, along with the projection booth. Renovations began in 2000, and current balcony seats were acquired from the Citadel Theatre and installed in 2010.
