Overview
Thales Nederland B.V. is the Dutch defense-electronics subsidiary of the French multinational Thales Group. Philips acquired a majority stake in Signaal in 1956. Under Philips ownership, the company expanded during the Cold War and broadened its capabilities in radar, naval electronics, fire control, computing, air-traffic-control equipment, and other defense technologies. Its international customer base and workforce grew substantially. Among its best-known developments was Goalkeeper, an autonomous close-in weapon system whose development began in the 1970s and which became a prominent naval short-range defense product. Philips also combined parts of its defense subsidiary Usfa with Signaal during the late 1980s. The end of the Cold War brought reductions in defense procurement and forced organizational restructuring and staff reductions. In 1990, Philips sold Signaal to Thomson-CSF, a French electronics and defense company. The business was renamed Thomson-CSF Signaal. When Thomson-CSF adopted the Thales name in 2000, the Dutch subsidiary became Thales Nederland. Today, Thales Nederland’s principal activities center on integrated naval defense systems. History
Thales Nederland originated in Hengelo in 1922 as NV Hazemeyer's Fabriek van Signaalapparaten, a joint venture established by the Dutch company Hazemeyer and the German firm Siemens & Halske. Its initial purpose was to manufacture naval fire-control systems. Establishing the enterprise in the Netherlands also enabled Siemens & Halske to participate in military production despite restrictions placed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. One of the company’s first major assignments was the supply of fire-control equipment for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Java-class cruisers HNLMS Sumatra and HNLMS Java. During the interwar period, the company developed from a domestic supplier into an international defense-electronics manufacturer. It sold systems to customers in several European countries, including Sweden, Spain, and Greece. Its capabilities covered fire control and, increasingly, radar and associated naval electronics. The German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940 brought the company under military occupation. German forces captured the Hengelo factory, while many employees escaped to the United Kingdom. Several of those employees later applied their knowledge of radar and fire-control systems to Allied efforts. The factory was heavily stripped and left in poor condition by the end of the war. Following the liberation of the Netherlands, the Dutch government recognized the strategic value of the enterprise and nationalized the company and its remaining assets. It was reorganized as N.V. Hollandsche Signaalapparaten, generally known as Signaal. During the late 1940s, the company reconstructed buildings, recruited new personnel, and resumed technical development. Its postwar work extended beyond naval fire control into radar, computers, air-traffic-control equipment, and other electronic systems. In 1956, Philips bought a substantial shareholding from the Dutch government and became Signaal’s majority owner. The company expanded significantly during the Cold War, opening or operating facilities in several Dutch locations and building an international customer base. It developed naval combat and surveillance systems, air-defense equipment, communications technologies, and sensor products. In the 1970s it began developing Goalkeeper, an autonomous close-in weapon system intended to protect naval vessels against short-range threats. The system became one of the company’s most recognizable defense products. During the late 1980s, part of Philips’s Usfa defense business was integrated with Signaal under the Signaal USFA name. By the end of the Cold War, Signaal employed more than 5,000 people and served customers in approximately 35 countries, according to historical descriptions of the company. The post-Cold War reduction in defense budgets caused a sharp decline in demand. Signaal responded with restructuring and reductions in staffing. Philips subsequently decided that defense was no longer a core part of its portfolio and sold the company in 1990 to Thomson-CSF, the French electronics and defense contractor. Signaal was then renamed Thomson-CSF Signaal. The company continued developing naval command systems, sensors, communications equipment, and air-defense technologies under its new ownership. In 2000, Thomson-CSF changed its corporate name to Thales, and the Dutch subsidiary became Thales Nederland. In 2001, Thales Nederland and EADS Germany created ET Marinesysteme in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, to develop and produce naval combat systems. EADS later became part of the Airbus group. Thales Nederland has remained closely connected to the Dutch defense-industrial base. Its work for the Royal Netherlands Navy includes radars, combat-management systems, sensors, communications, and integrated naval architectures. A 2014 statement of intent with the Royal Netherlands Navy aimed to deepen cooperation on maintenance. In the 2020s, reporting highlighted increased radar output as European demand for surveillance and air-defense equipment strengthened.
