Overview
Thöni Industriebetriebe, commonly known as the Thöni Gruppe (Thöni Group), is an internationally active Austrian family-owned industrial company headquartered in Telfs, Tyrol. Founded in 1964 by Arthur Thöni as a small locksmith's workshop with only three employees, the group has grown over more than six decades into a diversified industrial holding with around 900 employees worldwide. Its operations span aluminium extrusion and processing, automotive components, technical hoses, and sustainable energy and plant engineering. The group describes itself as standing for entrepreneurial consistency, technological innovation, and sustainable growth, with a portfolio of independent, professionally managed operating companies that are leaders in their respective fields. The group's core business areas are organized into distinct companies. Thöni Industriebetriebe GmbH and Thöni Deutschland GmbH produce aluminium profiles and components for the automotive, furniture, and construction industries, operating five extrusion presses in Telfs and Pfaffenhofen. Thöni Automotive Components GmbH supplies aluminium automotive components. Thöni Hose Solutions GmbH manufactures woven hoses for firefighting, agriculture, construction, and industry, continuing a hose production tradition at Telfs that dates back more than 125 years and became part of the Thöni Group in 1970. Thöni Sustainable Solutions GmbH develops machines and plants for bioenergy generation and continuous casting of non-ferrous metals. Thöni is headquartered at Obermarktstraße 48 in Telfs, Austria, with additional plants and subsidiaries in Landeck and Pfaffenhofen in Austria, Kempten in Germany, Rovereto in Italy, and Bellingham in the United States. The group is family-owned and family-managed, with Thöni Holding GmbH serving as the umbrella holding company. It is not listed on any stock exchange. The company emphasizes quality, reliability, trust, and personal responsibility as core values, and maintains certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and IATF 16949 for its automotive operations. In addition to manufacturing, Thöni invests in research and development and in workforce training. A dedicated R&D department was established in 2009, working on biogas plant technologies, production equipment such as PU extrusion lines, and aluminium alloys and processes. The Thöni Akademie, founded in 2008, serves as the group's training and education center, offering apprenticeships in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and mechatronics, and hosting the Technical Gymnasium Telfs since 2009. The group's apprenticeship program has been recognized by both the Austrian state and the province of Tyrol.
History
The Thöni Group was founded in 1964 by Arthur Thöni as a locksmith's workshop in Telfs, Tyrol, with only three employees. Two years later, in 1966, the company built its first production building in Telfs. A major expansion into hose manufacturing occurred in 1970 when Thöni took over hose production from Elsinger & Söhne, a business with a tradition at Telfs dating back more than 125 years. In 1975, an anodizing plant (Eloxalwerk) was put into operation in Telfs. In 1984, the company acquired the Landeck metal works and commissioned its first aluminium extrusion plant. This marked the group's entry into aluminium profile production, which would become a core business. In 1991, the environmental and energy technology division—today Thöni Sustainable Solutions—was established as an independent business unit focused on generating renewable energy from organic waste and renewable raw materials. International expansion continued in 1995 with the founding of the subsidiary Alu-Billets in Kempten, Germany, which now operates as Thöni Deutschland GmbH. In 2006, Thöni Automotive Components GmbH was founded, formalizing the group's automotive supply activities. Toward the end of the 2000s, the fourth aluminium extrusion plant was built in Telfs, and the Thöni Akademie was established in 2008 as a center for employee training and education, including a dedicated apprenticeship workshop and laboratories. In 2009, a research and development department was set up, and the Technical Gymnasium Telfs was placed under the Thöni Akademie umbrella. In September 2019, a new production site for the aluminium division was opened in Pfaffenhofen, Austria, featuring fully automated production processes. This site houses the group's fifth extrusion press in combination with an IHU press. Today, the Thöni Group operates internationally with locations in Austria (Telfs, Landeck, Pfaffenhofen), Germany (Kempten), Italy (Rovereto), and the United States (Bellingham), employing around 900 people worldwide. The group remains family-owned and family-managed, with Thöni Holding GmbH as the umbrella company.
