It is one of the 11 universities comprising the Texas A&M University System. The institution originated in 1947 as the University of Corpus Christi, a private university operated by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. In 1971, the Texas Legislature approved the establishment of a branch of the Texas A&M University System, and the Baptist General Convention sold the campus to the state. The university was initially named Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, later Corpus Christi State University, and in 1989 joined the Texas A&M University System and adopted its current name. The university is home to several research centers, including the Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science, the Harte Research Institute (focused on Gulf of Mexico environmental issues), and the Autonomy Research Institute, one of the FAA-designated unmanned aircraft system test sites. Student life includes a student government association, Greek life organizations, and student publications such as the Island Waves newspaper and Islander Magazine. The campus dining hall, Islander Dining Hall, has been recognized as an Ocean Friendly Restaurant for its sustainability efforts. The athletic teams are known as the Islanders.

History

Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi traces its origins to 1947, when it opened as the University of Corpus Christi, a private institution operated by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The campus, located on Ward Island (a peninsula separated from the mainland by wetlands), suffered severe damage from Hurricane Celia in 1970. The university had faced financial difficulties since its founding and could not afford to rebuild. It requested assistance from the Texas Legislature, which in 1971 approved the establishment of a branch of the Texas A&M University System. The University of Corpus Christi held its final graduating class in 1973, and the Baptist General Convention sold the campus to the state, retaining 10 acres for a student religious center. The new state institution was initially named Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, later becoming Corpus Christi State University. In 1989, it joined the Texas A&M University System and adopted its current name, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. Since then, the university has grown into a comprehensive public research university, classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity". It offers 33 undergraduate majors, 25 graduate programs, and six doctoral programs through six colleges. The university has also developed notable research centers, including the Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science, the Harte Research Institute, and the Autonomy Research Institute, which was designated by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2014 as one of the seven unmanned aircraft system test sites in the United States.
