History
The TeX Users Group (TUG) is a membership-based not-for-profit organization, founded in 1980, for anyone who uses the TeX typesetting system created by Donald Knuth and/or is interested in typography and font design. TeX itself is a computer language and program designed for use in typesetting, particularly for typesetting math and other technical material; it is a composition engine for typesetting entire documents. In the late 1970s, Donald E. Knuth was revising the second volume of The Art of Computer Programming and was dissatisfied with the typesetting quality of the publisher's new system, which led him to learn traditional rules for typesetting math and good typography, and to study type design. TUG supports the use and development of TeX and related software, and its activities include publishing TUGboat and holding annual conferences.
