Overview

Tertianum is a Swiss corporate brand and group active in senior living and long-term care. Founded in 1982 as Tertianum AG in Kirchlindach near Bern, the company has grown into what it describes as the Swiss market leader in high-quality living and ageing, with more than 100 locations across the country. Its offering spans nursing homes, senior residences, assisted-living apartments, a patient hotel in Lausanne, and a range of services including nursing care, medical support, gastronomy and social activities. The group states that it accommodates and cares for around 7,000 older people and employs nearly 7,000 staff plus roughly 600 apprentices. The brand positions itself around the promise of "Raum für Lebensfreude" — space for joy in life — and the idea of "more than a home." Its stated purpose is to enable joie de vivre for guests and their relatives, with the person always at the centre. Tertianum operates through a mix of owned and managed properties and works with municipalities and public bodies via private-public partnerships, taking over the operational management of senior-care real estate. It also supports acquisitions, operational takeovers and succession arrangements for existing homes and care centres. Ownership has evolved through a series of transactions. Tertianum acquired Seniorenresidenz St. Jakob-Park AG in Basel in 2006 and SENIOcare AG in Zurich in 2018. Since March 2020 the group has belonged to Capvis AG, a Swiss private-equity investor based in Baar. In 2024 it took over Alterszentrum Viktoria AG in Bern. On 12 December 2025 Tertianum announced the acquisition of the Senevita group, creating by far the largest provider of senior living and care in Switzerland. The company is headquartered in Dübendorf and remains privately held.

History

Tertianum AG was founded in 1982 in Kirchlindach near Bern, entering a Swiss market for senior care that was then dominated by public and charitable providers. Over the following decades the company expanded its network of nursing homes and senior residences, gradually building a national footprint. A significant step came in 2006 with the takeover of Seniorenresidenz St. Jakob-Park AG in Basel, which strengthened Tertianum's presence in north-western Switzerland. In 2018 the group acquired SENIOcare AG in Zurich, further consolidating its position in the country's largest metropolitan area. Ownership changed in March 2020 when Capvis AG, a Swiss private-equity investor headquartered in Baar, became the owner of Tertianum. Under Capvis, the group continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions. In 2024 it took over Alterszentrum Viktoria AG in Bern, adding capacity in the capital region. By the mid-2020s Tertianum described itself as the Swiss market leader in high-quality living and ageing, with more than 100 locations. According to its own figures, the group accommodated and cared for around 7,000 older people and employed nearly 7,000 staff plus roughly 600 apprentices. Its portfolio included 99 operating units across Switzerland and a patient hotel in Lausanne prior to the Senevita acquisition. On 12 December 2025 Tertianum announced the acquisition of the Senevita group. The transaction created by far the largest provider of senior living and care in Switzerland, significantly expanding Tertianum's scale and geographic reach. The company remains privately held and headquartered in Dübendorf.
