Overview
Teradata is an American enterprise software company whose products and services help large organizations collect, store, govern, query, and analyze data. Its core business developed from the enterprise data-warehousing market, but the company has progressively repositioned itself around cloud analytics, hybrid data architectures, artificial intelligence, and consulting services. Teradata serves customers across North and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, with particular relevance in industries that manage large and complex data estates, including financial services, retail, telecommunications, government, healthcare, and travel. The company originated in research and commercial discussions involving the California Institute of Technology and Citibank's advanced technology group during the 1970s. Teradata was incorporated in 1979 in Brentwood, California. Its early proposition was a database machine designed to distribute query processing across multiple processors, allowing organizations to work with data volumes and workloads that were difficult for conventional mainframe systems to handle. The DBC/1012 database machine, introduced in 1984, established the company's early commercial identity, with Citibank among its first important customers. Teradata expanded through both product development and acquisitions. It acquired Sharebase, formerly Britton Lee, in 1990, strengthening its position beyond its original IBM mainframe-oriented focus. NCR acquired Teradata in 1991, and Teradata subsequently operated as a major NCR business. During the 1990s and 2000s, the business developed large-scale data-warehouse deployments, including a system exceeding one terabyte for Wal-Mart in 1992. NCR also added customer relationship management, demand-chain management, and other enterprise software capabilities through acquisitions. Teradata became an independent public company in 2007, with its shares beginning separate trading in October of that year. As an independent company it pursued a broad acquisition program covering professional services, columnar databases, big-data analytics, Hadoop services, digital marketing, data archiving, cluster management, and data catalog technology. Some acquired marketing assets, especially the Aprimo business, were later divested as Teradata concentrated more heavily on data platforms and analytics. The company's current product strategy centers on Teradata Vantage, a data and analytics platform that evolved from the Teradata Database. Vantage combines relational data warehousing with tools for machine learning, graph analytics, multi-structured data, and connections to open-source technologies such as Spark and TensorFlow. It can be deployed on premises, in public clouds, in managed environments, or across hybrid and multi-cloud architectures. Related offerings have included Teradata Everywhere, IntelliCloud, the Teradata Analytics Platform, and ClearScape Analytics. Teradata has also been retiring older proprietary hardware platforms in favor of cloud and software-led delivery. Its hardware history remains important to the brand, particularly the massively parallel processing architecture and IntelliFlex systems, but the company increasingly presents itself as a provider of cloud data and AI infrastructure rather than as an appliance manufacturer. Steve McMillan became president and chief executive officer in 2020. In 2023, Teradata acquired Stemma, a data catalog provider, supporting its emphasis on governed and discoverable enterprise data. In 2024, a federal appeals court revived Teradata's trade-secret and antitrust claims against SAP after reversing an earlier ruling. In 2025, the company announced ModelOps-related capabilities intended to support generative and agentic AI applications.
History
Teradata's origins lie in the convergence of academic computing research and financial-sector demand for faster analysis of growing corporate data sets. During the 1970s, researchers associated with the California Institute of Technology and members of Citibank's advanced technology group explored architectures that could distribute database work across many processors. The resulting company was incorporated in 1979 in Brentwood, California, by Jack E. Shemer, Philip M. Neches, Walter E. Muir, Jerold R. Modes, William P. Worth, Carroll Reed, and David Hartke. Teradata commercialized its early ideas through the DBC/1012 database machine, released in 1984. The system used massively parallel processing to divide database workloads, an approach that became central to Teradata's identity. Citibank was an early customer, and the company subsequently pursued large organizations whose reporting and decision-support needs exceeded the capabilities of conventional systems. In 1990, Teradata acquired Sharebase, formerly known as Britton Lee, expanding its reach toward midrange database environments. NCR acquired Teradata in 1991 after announcing a transaction valued at approximately $250 million. Under NCR, Teradata became a major data-warehouse and analytics business. In 1992 it built what was described as the first system exceeding one terabyte for Wal-Mart, illustrating the scale of deployments that distinguished the company. NCR added adjacent enterprise capabilities during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Its 1999 acquisition of Strategic Technologies & Systems contributed to the broader Teradata Solutions Group, while later acquisitions included Ceres Integrated Solutions, Stirling Douglas Group, and financial-management software assets from DecisionPoint. NCR announced in January 2007 that Teradata would be separated into an independent public company. The independent company began trading in October 2007 under the ticker TDC. Its first years as an independent business were marked by expansion into consulting, customer analytics, marketing technology, big-data processing, and cloud-oriented services. Teradata acquired Claraview in 2008, Kickfire in 2010, Aprimo in 2010, and Aster Data Systems in 2011. Aster added capabilities associated with MapReduce and semi-structured data, helping Teradata respond to the growing importance of the term 'big data.' Further acquisitions broadened the portfolio. Teradata purchased eCircle, Revelytix assets, Think Big Analytics, RainStor, Appoxee, FLXone, MiaPearl, Big Data Partnership, and StackIQ between 2012 and 2017. These transactions covered digital marketing, Hadoop services, data archiving, mobile marketing, business intelligence, consulting, and cluster management. The company later sold its Aprimo marketing applications division to Marlin Equity Partners in 2016, reflecting a move away from some of the non-core marketing software activities accumulated during the prior expansion phase. Teradata's technology strategy increasingly shifted from dedicated hardware toward hybrid and public-cloud deployment. The company announced IntelliFlex in 2016, Teradata Everywhere in 2016, IntelliCloud in 2017, and the Teradata Analytics Platform in 2017. In 2018 it began promoting Vantage as the umbrella for its cloud analytics software. Vantage combined the company's relational database foundation with machine learning, graph analytics, support for multi-structured data, and interoperability with open-source tools. It was designed to run across on-premises infrastructure, managed environments, public clouds, and commodity systems. As cloud software became more central, Teradata began ending support for older hardware generations, while continuing support for selected current platforms and offering limited extensions in some cases. In 2020, Steve McMillan became president and chief executive officer. Teradata acquired Stemma in 2023, adding data-catalog capabilities that complement data governance and discovery. In 2024, an appellate decision revived Teradata's litigation against SAP concerning alleged trade-secret misuse and antitrust violations. In 2025, Teradata announced ModelOps updates connected with ClearScape Analytics and the operational management of generative and agentic AI workloads. The company's modern identity therefore combines its historic expertise in massively parallel data warehousing with cloud-native analytics, data governance, and enterprise AI enablement.

Teradata v. SAP trade-secret and antitrust litigation
Teradata accused SAP of using Teradata trade secrets to address technical issues in SAP software and of engaging in anticompetitive bundling and purchasing requirements. A federal appeals court reversed an earlier ruling favoring SAP, reviving Teradata's claims. The allegations and litigation outcome should not be treated as a final finding that SAP committed the alleged conduct.
