Overview
Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kul'tury (Theory and Practice of Physical Culture) is a Russian scientific-theoretical journal dedicated to physical education, sports science and related disciplines. It was founded in 1925 and is one of the oldest continuously recognised periodicals in its field in Russia. The journal is included in the list of scientific journals approved by the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK) of Russia, and it has been indexed in the Russian Science Citation Index (eLIBRARY.ru) and the international Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) on the Web of Science platform. The publication is currently issued by the autonomous non-profit organisation 'Scientific Publishing Centre "Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kul'tury i sporta"', based in Moscow at Sirenevy Boulevard, 4. The centre also publishes a companion journal, 'Fizicheskaya kul'tura: vospitanie, obrazovanie, trenirovka' (Physical Culture: Upbringing, Education, Training). The editorial office maintains a website at teoriya.ru, which provides access to current issues, news, and information about scientific events. The journal's content covers a wide range of topics, including children's and youth sports, sports training methodology, adaptive physical culture, sports medicine, and the social and humanitarian aspects of sport. It publishes original research articles, reviews, and methodological papers. Over its history, the journal has been affiliated with various state sports and health authorities, reflecting its role as a central scientific organ for physical culture in the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation. In 2025, the journal marks its 100th anniversary, with a round table dedicated to the centenary held on 3 October 2025. The publication continues to serve as a platform for scientific discussion and dissemination of research in physical culture and sports, maintaining its position as a key Russian-language journal in the field.
History
The journal 'Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kul'tury' was founded in 1925. In its first year it appeared as a supplement to the journal 'Izvestiya fizicheskoy kul'tury' and was called 'Teoriya i praktika fizkul'tury' in 1925–1926. During this period it had the status of a 'Collection of scientific works and articles on questions of physical culture'. From 1927 to 1931 it was titled 'Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kul'tury'. In 1932, as a result of the merger of 'Teoriya i praktika fizicheskoy kul'tury' and 'Fizkul'taktiv', it became the socio-political and scientific-methodological journal 'Fizkul'tura i sotsialisticheskoye stroitel'stvo', an organ of the Supreme Council of Physical Culture (VSFK) of the USSR, RSFSR and the People's Commissariat of Health of the USSR. In 1932, 12 issues were published (issues 10 and 11 as a combined issue). In 1933 the journal was renamed 'Sovetskaya fizkul'tura', but only one issue appeared under that name. From 1933 to 1936 the journal was not published; during this period there was effectively no printed organ in the USSR containing scientific articles on problems of physical education and sport. The journal was revived in 1937 and published until 1941. During the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945) it did not appear. Publication resumed in the post-war years, starting in 1945. The journal continued through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, maintaining its role as a central scientific periodical in the field. In the 2000s, the journal was included in the Russian Science Citation Index (eLIBRARY.ru) and the international Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) on the Web of Science platform. The editorial board was first mentioned in 1930, with an initial composition including N.A. Semashko as responsible editor. The first technical mention of an editorial board appeared in issue 8/9 for 1937, but without a personal list. The first post-war issue in 1945 presented a full editorial board. Over the decades, the journal has been affiliated with various state bodies, including the People's Commissariat of Health, the Supreme Council of Physical Culture, the All-Union Committee for Physical Culture and Sport, the Ministry of Health, the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport, and others. Since 1997, the editor-in-chief has been Lyudmila Ivanovna Lubysheva. In 2025, the journal celebrates its 100th anniversary.
