Overview
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation created by the United States Congress in 1933 during the New Deal. History
The Tennessee Valley Authority was established by the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 18, 1933. The legislation responded to the economic and environmental problems of the Tennessee Valley, where floods, poor navigation, soil erosion, low farm incomes, and limited electrification constrained development. TVA was given a broad mandate to improve navigation and flood control, develop the Tennessee River and its tributaries, generate and sell electricity, and promote regional economic welfare. TVA's first decades were defined by large-scale public works. It constructed and operated dams and reservoirs throughout the Tennessee River system, creating a navigable waterway, moderating floods, and producing hydroelectricity.
