Overview
Tempura Hirao (天麩羅処ひらお) is a tempura specialty restaurant brand based in Fukuoka, Japan. Its operator, Yugen Kaisha Hirao, is headquartered in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, and states that it operates eight directly operated stores within Fukuoka Prefecture. The brand traces its origins to 1978, when the predecessor 'Drive-In Hirao' opened; in 1979 it was renovated and relaunched as 'Tempura no Hirao', the first Hirao store and the current main store. The company describes a half-century of building the 'Hirao brand' and emphasizes quality of ingredients, safety, and direct operation.
History
The brand's history page states that in 1977 the predecessor Kenjiro Kawauchi opened 'Kawauchi Shoten' in Higashihirao, Fukuoka City, a fresh-food store carrying fish, produce, and meat. In 1978, 'Drive-In Hirao' opened on adjacent land; it was an ordinary restaurant serving noodles and set meals and is described as the predecessor of today's Hirao. In 1979, 'Drive-In Hirao' was renovated and relaunched as 'Tempura no Hirao', the commemorative first Hirao store and current main store, which quickly became popular for its tempura. In 1987, the Matsushima store opened and a dedicated processing plant for preparing ingredients and making shiokara was established, after which multi-store expansion began in earnest. Stores followed: Sawara in 2000, Hisayama in 2005, Kaizuka and Tenjin in 2006 (Tenjin being the first urban-style store), and Harada in 2010. In 2017 the Tenjin store closed on March 27 due to the sale and rebuilding of the Toho Building, and the brand renamed itself 'Tempura Hirao' (天麩羅処ひらお) and opened the Daimyo store on June 20. In 2018 the Tenjin Acros store opened in Acros Fukuoka on October 3. In 2024, furusato nozei (hometown tax donation) sales began in November alongside the establishment of a new factory in Sue Town, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 2025, the Sue store opened on March 15.
