Overview
Teletruria is an Italian regional television broadcaster headquartered in Arezzo, Tuscany. It was founded in November 1974 by Gianfranco Duranti under the name Teletruria 2000, making it one of the pioneers of private and local television in Italy. Its first broadcasts were distributed by cable in December 1974, and over-the-air transmission on UHF channel 35 began in February 1975, initially covering a limited part of the province of Arezzo. The station is operated by Teletruria 2000 S.r.l., whose registered office is at Case Nuove di Ceciliano 49/4, 52100 Arezzo. Teletruria's programming is built around local news and public-interest content. According to its corporate profile, the company employs a team of about 30 people, including journalists, marketing specialists and audiovisual professionals, and produces seven daily editions of its telegiornale (Rassegna Stampa, Breaking news, TG Giorno, TG Sera, TG Vallate, TG Altotevere and TG Sport). Its output also includes thematic programmes, documentaries, talk shows and reportage, with a strong focus on institutional communication for public bodies and on the promotion of the local area. The station broadcasts across Tuscany on digital terrestrial channel 16 and in Umbria on channel 88. Over the decades it has expanded its coverage from the province of Arezzo to much of central Italy, and it has also developed a web presence, offering live streaming and on-demand content through its website and social media channels. Teletruria has been part of the Etruria Media Group, which also included the local channel 102Tv, and it has launched thematic channels such as Teletruria Sport and Teletruria2. Its long-running evening news programme, Videocronaca Aretina, and historical shows such as Caffè Bollente and Buongiorno Etruria are part of its local identity. The company remains privately held and active.
History
Teletruria was founded in November 1974 by Gianfranco Duranti under the name Teletruria 2000, making it one of the earliest private local television stations in Italy. Its first headquarters were in Arezzo at Corso Italia 205, and cable broadcasts began in December 1974. In February 1975 the station started over-the-air transmissions on UHF channel 35, covering a limited area of the province of Arezzo. In 1978 the station was acquired by the Arezzo textile group Lebole. During a period when private broadcasting was still legally contested in Italy, Teletruria was involved in a legal battle that ended with the full recognition of the right of private broadcasters to exist, based on constitutional principles of freedom of the press and expression. In the 1980s the station gradually expanded its coverage using new transmission channels, becoming visible across almost the entire province of Arezzo and parts of the provinces of Siena, Perugia and Florence. Its evening news programme, Videocronaca Aretina, became a reference point for local television news, while the daily schedule was enriched with historical programmes such as Caffè Bollente, Il Giochino, Buongiorno Etruria and L'Etruria che Lavora. In 1983 the station was acquired by Benito Butali. In the 1990s Teletruria joined the Italia 9 Network consortium, airing some nationally oriented programmes supplied by the syndication (features, telefilms, telenovelas) while maintaining and expanding its large share of self-produced content. New productions included Esplorando, Chi Sono Cosa Fanno, Salute e Ambiente, Maramao and Terra di Arezzo. During this decade the station also promoted the Premio Protagonisti Chimera d'Oro, awarded to notable figures who contributed to promoting the Arezzo area internationally; among the recipients were François Mitterrand, Amintore Fanfani, Ivo Pitanguy, Renato Dulbecco, Franco Chioccioli, Carlo Fabbriciani, Venturini Venturi, Enzo Ghinazzi (Pupo), Walter Veltroni, Vittorio Sgarbi, Giuliano Amato, Mauro Ferri and Francesco Graziani. Teletruria also launched its teletext service during this period. On 5 May 2004 Teletruria began experimental digital terrestrial broadcasting, and on 28 March 2005 it launched Teletruria Sport, a thematic channel entirely dedicated to sport and distributed exclusively on digital terrestrial. In January 2006 the local channel 102Tv, based in Subbiano (AR), joined the new group named Etruria Media Group. In May 2008 the station moved to new purpose-built studios at Case Nuove di Ceciliano. This made it possible, on 1 October 2009, to consolidate the studios, offices and broadcasting of 102Tv at the same site, after that channel had been converted to digital terrestrial in September 2008. At the beginning of November 2011 the digital switch-off took place in Tuscany, and all television transmissions migrated to digital terrestrial. Teletruria's main channel was assigned LCN 10, the first number made available to local broadcasters in the region, while the channel named Teletruria 2-102Tv was placed at number 87. About a year and a half later, the station's third channel, Teletruria2, began broadcasting at number 185. The transition to digital transmission allowed Teletruria to reach a wider audience than ever before: the entire provinces of Arezzo, Siena, Florence, Prato and Pistoia and parts of the provinces of Grosseto, Pisa, Livorno and Perugia. In the same years Teletruria also developed its web presence, building a platform that provides access to much of its content through its website and social media pages, as well as live streaming of its daily programming.
