Overview
Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd., marketed as Teletalk, is a state-owned mobile telecommunications operator serving Bangladesh. It is the country's only government-sponsored mobile network operator and operates as a public limited company established under the Companies Act, 1994. The company emerged from a mobile-network initiative associated with the Bangladesh Telephone & Telegraph Board, initially referred to as BTTB bMobile, before being reorganized and branded as Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd. Teletalk was incorporated on 26 December 2004, received its certificate of commencement of business on the same day, and began commercial operations on that date. Its creation gave Bangladesh a publicly owned participant in a market otherwise dominated by private operators. The company invested approximately 2 billion taka in the development of a nationwide GSM network. It subsequently expanded from basic 2G voice and messaging into mobile data, international roaming, enterprise connectivity, and a range of digital services. The operator launched an HSPA network in 2012 and inaugurated LTE service on 16 December 2018. Its network uses GSM, UMTS/HSPA, and LTE technologies, while 5G has been associated with trial activity rather than a broadly established commercial service. Teletalk has also introduced eSIM capability, launching the service in February 2024. National roaming arrangements involving Banglalink have been trialed to help Teletalk subscribers obtain service where the Teletalk signal is weak, although the availability and performance of such arrangements can vary. Teletalk provides prepaid and other mobile packages, voice calling, SMS, MMS, bulk messaging, and mobile internet. It has marketed differentiated packages including Bornomala, Oporajita, Progorsa, and Inforsgy, with some plans directed toward particular user groups or usage patterns. Its service portfolio also extends beyond conventional telecommunications. The MyTeletalk application provides account and service-management functions; Teletalk AllJobs supports access to government and private employment information; and the company has offered mobile television and other content services. It also supports examination-result publication systems and a rural electricity-bill payment service accessed through TBPS. A notable characteristic of Teletalk is its public-service orientation. In addition to serving ordinary retail customers, the operator has supported government-oriented digital services and connectivity in locations that can be commercially difficult to serve. Reported coverage includes remote coastal, island, wetland, hill-tract, and forest areas, including parts of the Sundarbans and locations such as Katka, Dublar Char, Char Nizam, and other hard-to-reach communities. According to figures cited from the company's 2022–23 annual reporting, its network covered approximately 78 percent of the population at that time. Teletalk is generally positioned as a national, accessible, and socially oriented operator, reflected in the slogan "Amader Phone" or "Our Phone." It remains smaller than Bangladesh's leading private mobile operators and has been described as the country's fourth-largest mobile operator. Its strategic importance therefore rests not only on subscriber scale, but also on state ownership, nationwide public presence, support for government services, and the symbolic role of maintaining a domestically operated mobile network. The company operates under Bangladesh's telecommunications regulatory framework, including regulated tariff floors and ceilings and national rules governing mobile-number portability.
History
Teletalk's origins lie in a mobile-network project associated with the Bangladesh Telephone & Telegraph Board, known initially as BTTB bMobile. The initiative was reorganized as Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd., creating the only publicly sponsored mobile operator in Bangladesh. The company was incorporated on 26 December 2004 as a public limited company under the Companies Act, 1994. It obtained its certificate of commencement of business on the same day and launched commercial operations immediately afterward. The operator was established with authorized capital of 2,000 crore taka and invested about 2 billion taka in expanding a GSM network across the country. Its entry gave the Bangladeshi state a direct presence in mobile communications and created an institution intended to complement private-sector operators. Teletalk's identity has consequently combined commercial telecommunications with a public-service mission. The company has emphasized domestic ownership and a technically self-reliant workforce, describing itself as the only Bangladeshi mobile operator with a fully native technical and engineering human-resource base. During its early development, Teletalk focused on mobile voice, messaging, and network expansion. It added higher-speed data capability through an HSPA network inaugurated in 2012. That year also saw the introduction of the Progorsa and Inforsgy prepaid packages, illustrating the operator's use of segmented prepaid offers to address different customer groups. Teletalk later moved to fourth-generation connectivity, inaugurating LTE service on 16 December 2018. The company has maintained a nationwide network while giving particular attention to geographically difficult areas. Reported service locations include remote islands, coastal and wetland communities, hill-tract areas, and parts of the Sundarbans. According to data cited from Teletalk's 2022–23 annual report, the network covered about 78 percent of the population at that time. The operator has also explored national roaming with Banglalink, allowing Teletalk users in eligible circumstances to use another operator's network where Teletalk coverage is unavailable or weak. The arrangement has been described as being in trial or implementation stages, so its practical availability has not necessarily been uniform. Teletalk's service scope has broadened beyond traditional mobile connectivity. It offers voice, SMS, MMS, bulk SMS, mobile internet, and international roaming. The company has developed or supported several digital platforms, including the MyTeletalk application for customer services and offers, Teletalk AllJobs for government and private employment information, and systems for publishing public examination results. Its TBPS service provides a mechanism for rural electricity-bill payment, while Teletalk Mobile TV has provided mobile video and sports content. These initiatives reflect the operator's connection to government-facing digital infrastructure as well as its retail telecommunications business. Technologically, Teletalk has operated GSM services on the 900 MHz band, HSPA on 2100 MHz, and LTE using spectrum in the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands. Fifth-generation activity has been associated with trials rather than a fully documented nationwide commercial rollout. In February 2024 the company introduced eSIM, updating its subscriber proposition for compatible devices. Teletalk remains a smaller operator than Bangladesh's largest private competitors and is commonly identified as the country's fourth-largest mobile network operator. Its competitive position rests on state ownership, national branding, regulated and promotional pricing, government-related services, and coverage in locations that may be commercially less attractive. Its "Amader Phone" positioning presents the company as a national public asset as well as a consumer brand. The operator continues to provide mobile and digital services under Bangladesh's telecommunications rules, including requirements affecting tariffs, numbering, roaming, and mobile-number portability.
