Overview

Telequattro is a local Italian television broadcaster headquartered in Trieste, the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Founded in 1976 and beginning regular broadcasts on 18 December 1977, it is one of the oldest continuously operating regional television stations in northeastern Italy. Its name refers to the four provinces of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, signalling its ambition to serve the whole region, although its strongest audience base has always been the city of Trieste itself. From its earliest years Telequattro built a close relationship with Trieste's civic life. It broadcast live sessions of the city council during a politically turbulent period following the Treaty of Osimo, and it covered the main football and basketball teams of the city, becoming a reference point for local sports analysis. In the 1980s it retransmitted the Italia 1 signal alongside its own entertainment and news programming. Over the decades its programming pillars crystallised around news, sport, culture and social affairs. In August 2012 Telequattro was acquired by Teleradio Diffusione Bassano S.r.l., already the publisher of Rete Veneta, which relaunched the channel and helped it achieve leadership among local broadcasters in Friuli-Venezia Giulia through new programmes such as "Sveglia Trieste!" and the political talk show "Ring". Since 2018 it has been part of the Gruppo Medianordest, controlled by the Jannacopulos family. The channel's director is Luigi Bacialli, with Ferdinando Avarino as deputy director. Telequattro broadcasts 24 hours a day with several hours of autonomously produced content, using a mobile control room and Betacam SP recording. Its signal is carried in DVB-T within the Nord 1 multiplex owned by Rete Veneta, receivable in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia and, through signal spillover, along the coasts of Slovenia and northern Croatia. On the automatic LCN numbering it sits at channel 10 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and channel 610 in Veneto. Its daily schedule begins with live broadcasts at 7:00 a.m. and includes morning gymnastics for the elderly ("In forma con Telequattro"), culinary features ("Peccati in Tavola"), multiple daily news editions, sports talk ("Il caffè dello sport"), city-focused shows such as "Trieste in diretta" and "Rioni che passione", and live coverage of major local events including the Alpini parades, the reopening of the Politeama Rossetti and the opening of the Teatro Verdi season in November 2018. It has also provided on-site coverage of historic visits such as Pope John Paul II in 1992 and Pope Francis at Redipuglia in 2014. The comic duo Flavio Furian and Massimiliano Cernecca brought parody and political satire to the schedule with "Macete". Today Telequattro operates as the Trieste and Friuli-Venezia Giulia television brand of Medianordest, with newsrooms in Trieste, Gorizia and Udine, and remains a fixture of local information, sport and culture in the region.

History

Telequattro was founded in 1976 and began broadcasting at the end of the following year, with its first transmissions starting on 18 December 1977. It launched during a particularly significant period for Trieste: after the signing of the Treaty of Osimo, which established the definitive border between Italy and Yugoslavia, the city was shaken by the birth of the Lista per Trieste and became a laboratory for civic political movements that later spread across Italy. In the 1979 municipal elections, national political figures such as Giorgio Almirante and Marco Pannella were elected to the city council. Telequattro broadcast the council sessions live, forging a strong bond with the city that continues today. In parallel, the station began following the main football and basketball teams of Trieste, becoming an essential reference for league analysis. The name Telequattro derives from the number of provinces in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, underlining its goal of being a regional television service. In practice, its most important audience basin has always been the city where it is based. In addition to its headquarters, the network maintains newsrooms in Gorizia and Udine. During the 1980s it retransmitted the Italia 1 signal, accompanied by its own entertainment and news programmes. From its earliest days Telequattro showed a particular interest in Italian cinema, especially comedy. Over the years the cornerstones of its programming became information, sport, culture and social issues. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, with several hours of autonomously produced programmes. It is equipped with a mobile control room and uses the Betacam SP recording system. Its signal is transmitted using DVB-T digital technology within the Nord 1 multiplex owned by Rete Veneta. This multiplex distributes its signal via repeaters installed in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and is receivable in those regions and, through signal spillover, along the coastal strip of Slovenia and northern Croatia. Under automatic LCN numbering, Telequattro is positioned at channel 10 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia (the first in the primary local TV band from 10 to 19) and at channel 610 in Veneto. In August 2012 Telequattro was acquired by Teleradio Diffusione Bassano S.r.l., already the publisher of Rete Veneta, which managed its relaunch and ensured its leadership in Friuli-Venezia Giulia through the creation of new programmes such as "Sveglia Trieste!" and "Ring", the political talk show hosted by Ferdinando Avarino. Since 2018 the channel has been part of the Gruppo Medianordest, owned by Filippo Jannacopulos. The director of Telequattro is Luigi Bacialli, with Ferdinando Avarino as deputy director. The station's output is dense, with live broadcasts beginning at 7:00 a.m. The schedule includes morning gymnastics for the elderly with "In forma con Telequattro" and culinary features with "Peccati in Tavola". Through its various daily news editions and programmes such as "Sveglia Trieste!" (which connects viewers with local and national political figures), "Il caffè dello sport", "Trieste in diretta", "Rioni che passione", "Qua la Zampa", "Diseghelo a Jovanka", "Studio Telequattro", and programmes linked to the city's theatre seasons, as well as live coverage of events (the Alpini parades, the reopening of the Politeama Rossetti after renovation, the opening show of the Teatro Verdi season in November 2018) and on-site presence during news events and occasions of institutional importance (such as the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1992 and that of Pope Francis at Redipuglia in 2014), Telequattro has maintained a close relationship with its viewers, further enriched when the station joined the Gruppo Televisivo Medianordest. The success of the comic duo Flavio Furian and Massimiliano Cernecca opened Telequattro's programming to parody and political satire with the show "Macete".
