Telepictures is an American television production and distribution company whose business has centered on creating, packaging, producing, and syndicating programs for broadcast television. It was established in 1979 by David Salzman, Michael Jay Solomon, and Michael Garin as a television syndication firm. The company initially worked across several parts of the television business, including the distribution of programs and specials, production for network and public television, and the licensing of established library material for domestic and international markets. During its early years, Telepictures distributed programming associated with Rankin/Bass and handled a varied slate that included animated series, specials, game shows, magazine-style programs, and library titles. Its syndication portfolio included programs such as My Favorite Martian, Here's Lucy, Love Connection, and the original The People's Court. Telepictures began in 1979 as a syndication company founded by David Salzman, Michael Jay Solomon, and Michael Garin. Its early strategy was diversified: rather than relying on one program type, the company distributed game shows, older television properties, specials, and animated material while also producing projects for network and public television. A relationship involving Charles Fries Productions supported underwriting for some public-television activity, and the company also pursued international distribution, including a deal involving Time-Life Television programming in the Middle East. Telepictures also launched Perennial, a division focused on distributing evergreen library programming, including Mayberry, R.F.D. and The New Dick Van Dyke Show. A 1984 agreement with Dick Clark Productions gave Telepictures distribution access to much of Dick Clark's production and special-event output. The most consequential pre-Warner transaction occurred on February 19, 1986, when Telepictures merged with Lorimar Television to form Lorimar-Telepictures. The combined company handled production and distribution for major Lorimar properties, including Dallas and Knots Landing, and expanded its first-run syndication activity with programs such as Mama's Family. Telepictures briefly entered station ownership by acquiring Pittsburgh Fox affiliate WPGH-TV, but sold the station after about a year. It also considered acquiring WTVJ in Miami but did not complete that transaction. In 1988 Warner Communications acquired the company. The post-acquisition structure separated Lorimar Television as a production entity while the Telepictures operations were integrated into Warner's distribution and production framework. From 1990, the Telepictures Productions name was used for syndicated programming production, with Warner Bros. Television handling distribution. A later joint venture with Time Inc., known as Time-Telepictures Television, co-produced certain shows beginning in 1994, including Extra-related programming. That venture ended in 2003, after which its productions returned to the main Telepictures name. Telepictures Distribution existed as a Warner division from 1995 to 2003. It distributed programming produced outside Warner Bros. when syndication rights had been licensed to Warner or Turner, as well as selected Warner properties.
