Overview
Telefónica Argentina is the Argentine telecommunications operation of Spain-based Telefónica Group. It was established in 1990 following the privatization and reorganization of Argentina’s state-owned National Telecommunications Company, ENTel. The company became one of the principal telecommunications operators in Argentina, developing a broad portfolio spanning fixed-line voice services, mobile communications, broadband internet, television, data connectivity, and communications solutions for business customers. The company’s consumer activities have largely been associated with the Movistar brand, which is used for mobile, fixed-line, internet, and television offerings in Argentina. Tuenti has also been used as a lower-cost or digitally oriented mobile brand. Enterprise activities have been organized through Telefónica Empresas Argentina, historically operating under the corporate name Telefónica Data de Argentina S.A., with services including voice, data communications, internet access, connectivity, and related support for companies and institutions. Telefónica Argentina’s wider local structure has also included Telefónica Móviles Argentina S.A., the legal entity connected with Movistar’s mobile operations; Pléyade Argentina, an insurance administration operation associated with the Telefónica Group; and Fundación Telefónica Argentina, which supports social and community initiatives. This structure reflects Telefónica’s practice of separating consumer, enterprise, administrative, and social-impact activities within national markets. For much of its history, Telefónica Argentina operated as one of the country’s two largest telecommunications and internet providers, competing principally with Telecom Argentina. Its market position has been shaped by the expansion of mobile networks, fixed and wireless broadband, bundled connectivity and entertainment services, and the increasing importance of digital customer channels. The company has also remained exposed to Argentina’s regulated telecommunications environment, including government oversight of competition, network access, service pricing, and ownership changes. On February 24, 2025, Telefónica Hispanoamérica reached an agreement with Telecom Argentina for the sale of all of its shares in Telefónica Argentina. The reported transaction value was US$1.245 billion. The proposed acquisition remained subject to regulatory and governmental scrutiny, and later reporting indicated that the parties were discussing continued use of Telefónica brands in Argentina, especially Movistar, while approval of the transaction was disputed. Accordingly, Telefónica Argentina’s ownership and commercial-brand arrangements were in transition in 2025, even though its operating businesses and established market presence continued to be associated with Argentina’s telecommunications sector.
History
Telefónica Argentina emerged from the restructuring of Argentina’s telecommunications sector following the privatization of ENTel. It was founded in 1990 as a local subsidiary of Telefónica Group, one of the international operators that entered or expanded in the newly privatized market. The company inherited and developed a substantial fixed-line network and became a major participant in Argentina’s national communications infrastructure. During its development, Telefónica Argentina expanded beyond traditional fixed-line voice services. Mobile communications were organized through Telefónica Móviles Argentina S.A. and marketed principally under the Movistar brand. The local portfolio subsequently included mobile voice and data, fixed telephony, broadband internet, television, and other connectivity services. Tuenti was also used as a separate mobile brand aimed at digitally oriented and price-sensitive customers. Telefónica’s Argentine operations were divided among several entities and functional areas. Telefónica Empresas Argentina, historically associated with Telefónica Data de Argentina S.A., provided voice, data, internet, and communications support to businesses. Pléyade Argentina handled insurance administration linked to the Telefónica Group’s local activities. Fundación Telefónica Argentina operated social and collaborative programs intended to help individuals and organizations address community needs. Together, these units extended the company’s presence beyond consumer telecommunications into enterprise services, administration, and social-impact work. The company became one of Argentina’s two largest telephone and internet operators, competing primarily with Telecom Argentina. Its competitive environment was influenced by the migration from fixed voice to mobile services, the growth of broadband and data consumption, the development of bundled communications and entertainment products, and regulatory decisions affecting telecommunications prices, competition, and network access. Movistar served as the principal consumer-facing identity for many of these services. A major strategic change occurred in 2025. On February 24, Telefónica Hispanoamérica agreed to sell all of its shares in Telefónica Argentina to Telecom Argentina for a reported US$1.245 billion. The transaction required approval and became subject to dispute and scrutiny by the Argentine government. Later in 2025, reporting described negotiations concerning whether Telefónica brands, especially Movistar, could continue to be used in Argentina. These developments created uncertainty around the company’s ownership, legal structure, and brand architecture, while highlighting the strategic importance of Telefónica Argentina within the country’s telecommunications market.
