Teknoware Rail & Road

Teknoware Rail & Road is the public-transport division of Teknoware, a Finnish lighting specialist founded in 1972 in Lahti. The division designs, develops and manufactures lighting and interior solutions for trains, trams, metros, buses and other rolling stock, covering areas such as exterior lighting (headlights, marker lights, tail lights and indicator lights) and interior solutions from LED lighting to ceiling solutions. Teknoware states it is a pioneer in intelligent lighting control and that its solutions meet regulations in Europe, North America and the rest of the world, with the company meeting ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. Public transportation solutions are developed and delivered by units in Finland, the UK, Malaysia, Poland and the US. Teknoware is part of the Teknopower Group.

Teknoware was founded in 1972 in Lahti, Finland by engineer Kalervo Virtanen and his business partner, electronic engineer Matti Vataja, as Teknoware Oy. The family-run company's product development began in Virtanen's sauna cottage, where its first innovation, the lighting inverter TRM-30, was developed. That inverter opened the door to the vehicle solutions business and formed the technical core for emergency and backup lights, first produced in 1974. In the 1980s Teknoware pursued fast international growth driven by innovative products, big clients such as Mercedes-Benz, and new legislation requiring emergency lights; its portfolio grew with route sign lights equipped with fluorescent tubes, electric safety edges and emergency lights. In 1989 Teknoware developed and patented the automatic testing system for emergency lights called Exitest TW2000. In 2022 Teknoware celebrated its 50th anniversary. Today Teknoware designs and manufactures lighting and interior solutions for trains, buses and trams, as well as emergency lighting systems for buildings and cruise ships, with public transportation solutions developed and delivered by units in Finland, the UK, Malaysia, Poland and the US. Teknoware Rail & Road is the division that designs, develops and manufactures lighting and interior solutions for public transport vehicles worldwide, and Teknoware is part of the Teknopower Group.
