Overview

The Tegernseer Hütte is a mountain hut (Berghütte) in the Bavarian Prealps, situated at 1,650 metres above sea level on the summit of the Buchstein in the municipality of Kreuth, Upper Bavaria, Germany. It is owned and operated by the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV) and serves as a base for hikers, climbers and nature lovers exploring the surrounding peaks of Roßstein (1,698 m) and Buchstein (1,701 m). The hut offers overnight accommodation, food and drinks, and is a starting point for numerous hiking routes and around 90 climbing routes graded UIAA 3 to 9+. The hut was first built in autumn 1903 and opened on 14 August 1904. Over the decades it has been expanded and modernised, including the addition of a basement in 1934, a generator in 1951, a cable car in 1958, and solar power and water filtration systems in the 1980s and 1990s. A lightning strike completely destroyed the hut on 10 May 1965, leading to its reconstruction. Today, the Tegernseer Hütte is a popular destination for day visitors and overnight guests, typically open from Tuesday to Sunday with varying hours, and offers a booking system for overnight stays. The hut is accessible from a parking area at 850 metres between Kreuth and the Achen Pass. As a DAV hut, the Tegernseer Hütte is part of a network of alpine refuges that provide essential services in the mountains. It is a quintessential example of a traditional Alpine club hut, combining hospitality with a commitment to safety and environmental sustainability. The hut's website provides current information on opening hours, menu, and booking, and it maintains a webcam for visitors to check conditions.

History

The Tegernseer Hütte was first constructed in autumn 1903 as a small refuge with a parlour and a room containing eight beds. It officially opened on 14 August 1904. Eight years later, a larger hut was rebuilt with a common room, kitchen, two additional rooms, and a water treatment system. Despite financial and structural difficulties, a basement was converted in 1934, adding more rooms in the basement and under the roof. In 1951, a generator was purchased to improve supplies, and in 1958 a cable car was built to facilitate access. On 10 May 1965, the hut was completely destroyed by lightning and had to be rebuilt. During the 1980s and 1990s, a solar (photovoltaic) system was installed to generate electricity, along with a water filtration system, a mobile phone, and later a telephone system. The construction concluded with a west-facing terrace. The hut remains an important base for hikers and climbers in the Bavarian Prealps.
