Overview
TEEPACK (Teepack Spezialmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG) is a German manufacturer of tea bag packaging machines and tubular bag machines, headquartered in Meerbusch, Germany. Founded in 1948 by Adolf Rambold, the company is part of the Teekanne Group. TEEPACK is the world market leader in tea bag packaging machinery, with machines operating in over 50 countries. The company invented the double chamber tea bag, a design that remains the global standard for tea bags. TEEPACK has sold more than 3,000 packaging machines for double chamber tea bags since its founding. The company employs around 180 people, more than two-thirds of whom are engineers, mechanical engineers, and specialist workers. TEEPACK machines are known for their durability, low energy consumption, and low spare parts requirements; some machines built in the 1950s are still in operation worldwide. The product range includes the PERFECTA R and CONSTANTA RC models, as well as retrofit services to upgrade existing machines with state-of-the-art technology. TEEPACK also offers spare parts, service level agreements, and agencies. The company's machines are used not only for tea but also for other foods and non-food products. TEEPACK's success is closely tied to the history of Teekanne and the invention of the double chamber tea bag by Adolf Rambold, which revolutionized the tea industry. Despite market saturation in the 1990s, TEEPACK expanded into new applications and opened new markets in Russia and Asia. Today, TEEPACK continues to innovate, offering fast, flexible, and modular packaging solutions.
History
The history of TEEPACK is closely intertwined with the development of Teekanne into a leading tea company and the invention of the double chamber tea bag. During World War I, Teekanne's parent company R. Seelig & Hille in Dresden supplied the first predecessors of the infusion bag to soldiers under the name 'Tee-Bombe'. These were made of gauze and handcrafted in a simple manner. Although the gauze bags gave the water a light brown color, they did not release the fine aroma of the tea leaves. A solution was sought, and development costs were not spared. Eventually, Teekanne employee Adolf Rambold succeeded in constructing a new machine and using a different material to find a better economic and taste solution. The new material was perforated, completely tasteless special parchment paper, which had the advantage that no taste transfer to the tea was detected. The new machine produced 75 tea bags per minute and was exported all over the world. The transition from gauze bags to infusion bags made of perforated parchment paper also took place in many parts of the world, although the Americans advanced this development further by using water-insoluble filter paper. Adolf Rambold and the Teepack Spezialmaschinen GmbH, founded with him in 1948, then tried to produce an inexpensive tea bag through various tests with different paper materials, different tea types, folding techniques, and machines. In 1949, he presented the solution in the form of the fully automatic tea bag packaging machine Constanta. It produced 180 double chamber tea bags per minute. In the 1990s, market saturation became apparent in the traditional area of application, and the company went through a crisis. In the meantime, additional applications were developed and new sales markets were opened in Russia and Asia. Since its founding in 1948, TEEPACK has delivered more than 3,000 packaging machines for double chamber tea bags, and most of them are still running. TEEPACK operates in over 50 countries and employs around 180 people, more than two-thirds of whom are engineers, mechanical engineers, and specialist workers. The company is part of the Teekanne Group and is headquartered in Meerbusch, Germany.
