Overview
TecnoVeritas – Serviços de Engenharia e Sistemas Tecnológicos, Lda., commonly shortened to TecnoVeritas and formerly known as S.E.S.T., is a Portuguese engineering and high-technology solutions company serving the industrial and marine sectors. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in the Tagus Park science and technology park in the municipality of Mafra, about 15 km from Lisbon, the company has built more than three decades of activity around emissions reduction, fuel treatment and energy management. Its Portuguese premises house testing and training rooms as well as a laboratory, while offices in London, also established in 1994, give the group international reach and support worldwide spare-parts acquisition services. TecnoVeritas manufactures and supplies power and energy management solutions for the marine industry and for industry generally, tailoring them to client needs. Its product portfolio includes the VTEC diesel-engine conversion to dual fuel, the EDS engine diagnosis system, BOEM-S plant and ship performance business assurance, the FUEL LAB portable fuel and lube-oil laboratory, slop-oil treatment and valorisation plants, the ENERMULSION water-in-fuel emulsion system, exhaust-gas catalysts, the VEEO energy-efficiency performance monitoring system and the OPTIPOWER torque and thrust meter. Alongside these products it offers specialised services in energy, environmental and mechanical engineering – condition monitoring, consultancy, energy audits, ISO 50001 support, laboratory analysis, MRV monitoring and reporting plans, and training – certified to ISO 9001 since 2004. The company was certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in 1997 as a specialised condition-control company and became a member of COGEN Portugal, the Portuguese association for energy cogeneration. Under the impetus of executive president Jorge Antunes, TecnoVeritas has specialised in high-tech naval technologies and moved into the design and construction of naval drones for the high seas and long-range navigation. With Portuguese partners Nautiber Shipyard and NORCAM it launched in 2020 the UOPV (Unmanned Oceanic Patrol Vehicle) project, supported by the Fundo Azul, to develop an 8-metre drone for coastal and high-seas patrol, port-entry control, maritime-pollution response, fisheries support, search and rescue, and – in an armed military version – offensive and defensive anti-submarine operations. First real-condition trials took place in 2023 with the Portuguese Navy, which accepted the prototypes and accompanied testing; the Australian and Greek navies have also expressed interest. The drone can remain at sea for more than six months and uses two propulsion systems: wave energy and electric propulsion using hydrogen produced on board. TecnoVeritas develops the control and communication system using artificial intelligence and inference algorithms, collaborating with the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Lisbon (FCT) and Professor José Barata's working group; the carbon-fibre hull is built from moulds made by NORCAM. The company is now regarded as a significant European builder of civil and military naval drones. TecnoVeritas also participates in environmental and hydrogen research, including the environmental revamping of the vessel M/S Vasco da Gama and the GreenH2ICE R&D project to develop a high-efficiency renewable hydrogen production station for fuelling vehicles and a new process for converting internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen. Headquartered in Portugal with a global reach, the privately held company continues to position itself around innovation, knowledge and long-term client partnerships.
History
TecnoVeritas – Serviços de Engenharia e Sistemas Tecnológicos, Lda. was founded in 1994 under the name S.E.S.T. Its headquarters are located in the Tagus Park science and technology park in the municipality of Mafra, about 15 km from Lisbon. The Portuguese premises house the company's testing and training rooms as well as its laboratory. Since 1994 the group has also maintained offices in London, which provide international projection and support worldwide spare-parts acquisition services. In 1997 S.E.S.T. was certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) as a specialised condition-control company and became a member of COGEN Portugal, the Portuguese association for energy cogeneration. Originally the group provided engineering services and technological solutions for the naval and industrial sectors, gaining recognition in energy management, handling and the reduction of polluting emissions; it has been certified to the ISO 9001 standard since 2004. Under the impetus of its executive president Jorge Antunes, TecnoVeritas specialised in high-tech naval technologies and moved into the design and construction of naval drones intended for the high seas and long-range navigation. Associated with Portuguese builders and industrialists Nautiber Shipyard and NORCAM for shipyards and moulds, TecnoVeritas launched in 2020 its project to design and create the UOPV (Unmanned Oceanic Patrol Vehicle). Supported by the Fundo Azul, the project's main objective was to develop and manufacture a powerful 8-metre drone intended to patrol coastlines and the high seas, control port entry, combat maritime pollution, support fishing, carry out rescues, and also conduct offensive and defensive anti-submarine warfare operations in its armed military version. The first real-condition trials of the drone took place in 2023, in association with the Portuguese Navy, which accepted the prototypes and accompanied the tests. The Australian and Greek navies have also expressed interest in the project. In its current version, the drone can navigate at sea for long periods – more than 6 months – and send data ashore or to a support ship. It has two propulsion systems: one uses wave energy, the other electric propulsion using hydrogen produced on board. This latest-generation maritime drone is equipped with an autonomous remote-control system based on the fusion of data from several on-board sensors; these sensors vary according to the drone's operations, whether military or civil. To manage data fusion, TecnoVeritas collaborates with the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Lisbon (FCT) and Professor José Barata's working group. TecnoVeritas develops the control and communication system, using artificial intelligence and inference algorithms to analyse surrounding conditions and navigation. The hull construction is also innovative, made of carbon fibre and produced from moulds manufactured by NORCAM, a company specialising in large-dimension moulds. With its partners, TecnoVeritas is currently regarded as an important European builder of civil and military naval drones. Alongside its naval-drone work, the company has continued to develop and supply emissions-reduction and energy-management products and services for both the marine and shore-based industrial markets, including the environmental revamping of the vessel M/S Vasco da Gama and participation in the GreenH2ICE R&D project to develop a high-efficiency renewable hydrogen production station for fuelling vehicles and a new process for converting internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen.
