Overview

Tecnoprint, originally known as Editora Tecnoprint and later as Ediouro Publicações, is a Brazilian publishing group with roots dating back to 1939. It was founded in Rio de Janeiro by brothers Antonio and Jorge Gertum Carneiro, initially as Publicações Pan-Americanas, an importer of books and foreign magazine subscriptions. When World War II made imports difficult, the company pivoted to translating and publishing technical books, eventually becoming Editora Gertum Carneiro S.A. and later Edições de Ouro. The Tecnoprint name was used during a period of expansion that included pocket books, mail-order sales, and the launch of the Coquetel puzzle magazine. Over the decades, the group grew into one of Brazil's leading publishers, with a catalog spanning technical books, fiction, non-fiction, puzzles, and comics. It acquired Editora Agir in 2002 and formed a joint venture with Thomas Nelson in 2006 that later became HarperCollins Brasil. The company remains family-owned and is currently led by Jorge Carneiro. Its imprints include Coquetel, Agir, Pixel, Nova Fronteira, and Trama. Tecnoprint/Ediouro is recognized for its contribution to Brazilian culture and its extensive catalog of over 3,500 titles.

History

Tecnoprint, originally Editora Tecnoprint, is a Brazilian publishing house that emerged from the broader history of Grupo Ediouro. The company was founded in 1939 in Rio de Janeiro by brothers Antonio and Jorge Gertum Carneiro, initially as Publicações Pan-Americanas, an importer of books and foreign magazine subscriptions. With the onset of World War II, imports became difficult, prompting the founders to shift to translating and publishing technical books. The company was renamed Editora Gertum Carneiro S.A. and later became known as Edições de Ouro. During this period, the Tecnoprint name was used for the publishing operations that introduced pocket books, mail-order sales, and the Coquetel puzzle magazine. In 1961, the publisher merged with its printing division, leading to further expansion. Over the following decades, the group, under the Ediouro banner, became one of Brazil's largest publishers, with a catalog of thousands of titles. In 2002, it acquired Editora Agir, adding 3,500 titles. In 2006, it formed a joint venture with Thomas Nelson, which later became HarperCollins Brasil. The company also launched the Ediouro Quadrinhos imprint in 2005 and Pixel Media in 2006, though these had mixed success. Today, Tecnoprint/Ediouro remains a family-owned group with multiple imprints and a strong presence in the Brazilian publishing market.
