History
Technomics, Inc. traces its origins to April 1978, when Technomics Information Service Co., Ltd. (株式会社テクノミックインフォメーションサービス) was established in Nihonbashi-Ningyocho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, with capital of 3 million yen. In January 1979 the company became the Japanese general sales agent for Micromedex, Inc., beginning a long-standing role as a licensed distributor of foreign medical information products. During the 1980s the company expanded its publishing and database activities. Capital was increased to 4 million yen in August 1981, and in December 1981 it issued the first edition of the English-language Japanese pharmaceutical company directory (英文版日本製薬会社録). In November 1982 it launched Asuno Shinyaku (明日の新薬), which became its flagship drug-development publication. An English edition, Pharmcast, followed in May 1983, and in October 1983 the company issued what it describes as Japan's first electronic journal, the floppy-disk edition of Asuno Shinyaku. An online service for Asuno Shinyaku / PHARMCAST began in May 1986, and in January 1987 the company started supplying Micromedex's CCIS on CD-ROM. In the 1990s Technomics broadened its agency portfolio and corporate structure. It became the Japanese general sales agent for Current Patents Ltd. (later Thomson Scientific) in April 1991 and for Ashley Publications Ltd. (later Informa Healthcare) in April 1994. Capital was raised to 10 million yen in June 1992, and in January 1993 the company changed its name to Technomics, Inc. (株式会社テクノミック) and began offering the chemical structure-readable database PHARMCAST DATA. In November 1994 it published the first editions of the Asuno Shinyaku supplements New Drug Development Progress List and New Drug Development Stage Chart. The e-InfoStream edition of Asuno Shinyaku followed in July 1997, a general book-publishing business began in August 1998, and a CD-ROM edition of Asuno Shinyaku was issued in January 1999. From 2000 onward the company continued to update its product line and operations. It published Applied Therapeutics Volume 1 in February 2000, completing the five-volume series in January 2002. In January 2003 it began offering Asuno Shinyaku on IDdb, and in July 2003 it relocated its head office to its current address in Kyobashi. In February 2005 it absorbed Science Press Co., Ltd. (サイエンスプレス株式会社) as the Science Press Division (now SP Division), with capital restated at 16 million yen. The web edition of Asuno Shinyaku was launched in January 2006, and the SP Division moved to the current head office in August 2006. The company's published chronology continues into October 2008 and beyond. Today Technomics remains a privately held Japanese corporation headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, led by Representative Director Yohei Otsuka, with Kenichiro Otsuka as advisor. It continues to publish and distribute pharmaceutical and medical databases and to act as Japanese general sales agent for foreign information providers.
