Overview

TechnipFMC plc is a United Kingdom-domiciled global energy-technology and engineering company serving oil and gas producers and other energy-sector customers. It was created through the combination of FMC Technologies, a United States-based supplier of wellhead, subsea, and surface equipment, and Technip, a French engineering and project-services group with deep expertise in offshore facilities, subsea installation, liquefied natural gas, refining, and petrochemicals. The transaction was announced in 2016 and became operational as a unified company in January 2017. The combined company was designed to bring engineering, manufacturing, project management, and field installation into a more integrated offering. Its principal activities have historically been organized around subsea, offshore, and surface projects. In subsea, TechnipFMC designs and supplies systems that control and produce hydrocarbons on the seabed, including subsea trees, manifolds, control systems, umbilicals, flexible pipe, and related installation and intervention services. The company also provides integrated project delivery, linking equipment supply with engineering, construction, vessel operations, and commissioning. Offshore and surface capabilities have included engineering and construction for offshore facilities, wellheads, pressure-control equipment, production systems, and broader infrastructure for onshore fields and processing sites. TechnipFMC operates internationally, with activities reported across 48 countries and a workforce representing approximately 126 nationalities in the reference period. Its corporate domicile is in London, while Houston and Paris remain important centers reflecting the historical bases of FMC Technologies and Technip. The company has also operated a fleet of specialized vessels for flexible-pipe, rigid-pipe, heavy-lift, diving-support, and subsea-construction work. Manufacturing and service infrastructure has included flexible-pipe facilities in France, Brazil, and Malaysia and umbilical-production operations in the United Kingdom, United States, Angola, Singapore, Brazil, and Malaysia. The merger occurred during a prolonged downturn in oil prices, when customers were reducing capital spending and oilfield-service companies were seeking scale, lower project costs, and more standardized technologies. TechnipFMC positioned its integrated subsea model as a way to reduce offshore development complexity and improve project economics. Its consulting and engineering activities have also included the PT and Genesis businesses, which have supported technology development, field planning, concept design, and project execution. In 2019, management announced a plan to separate the legacy Technip engineering and construction activities from the subsea business. The transaction was temporarily suspended in March 2020 because of financial-market disruption and the COVID-19 crisis, then completed in February 2021. The separated engineering business became Technip Energies, while TechnipFMC continued as a focused technology and services company centered on subsea and surface activities. TechnipFMC has participated in projects including Yamal LNG, Prelude FLNG, Coral South FLNG, the Liza deepwater development in Guyana, projects in the Gulf of Mexico, and field developments in Norway, Ghana, Australia, India, and the Middle East. Its history also includes significant compliance matters involving predecessor-company conduct, including a 2010 French fine concerning Technip and a 2019 resolution of bribery allegations involving activities associated with FMC Technologies and TechnipFMC. The company remains listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol FTI.

History

TechnipFMC was formed from two established energy-service businesses. Technip developed from a French engineering and construction tradition and built capabilities in offshore facilities, subsea installation, LNG, refining, petrochemicals, and large industrial projects. FMC Technologies, headquartered in the United States, supplied equipment and technologies for drilling, well completion, production, and subsea operations. Their merger was announced in 2016 and completed in January 2017, when the new company began operating under the TechnipFMC name. The combination took place during a difficult period for the oilfield-services industry. A prolonged decline in crude prices had reduced exploration and production spending, particularly on complex offshore developments. TechnipFMC presented the merger as a way to offer customers a more integrated project model, combining design, technology, equipment, installation, and services. This approach was especially important in subsea projects, where separate contracting interfaces can add cost and schedule risk. After formation, the company operated through subsea, offshore, and surface activities. Subsea operations included the design and manufacture of production systems, flexible pipe, umbilicals, controls, manifolds, and subsea trees, as well as installation and intervention work. The offshore and surface businesses supported platform, field-development, wellhead, pressure-control, production, and engineering projects. The company also maintained consulting and concept-engineering capabilities through PT and Genesis. TechnipFMC expanded its offshore execution capacity through specialized vessels. During the 2016–2017 period, vessels associated with the DOF-Technip partnership joined the fleet, including Skandi Açu, Skandi Buzios, Skandi Olinda, and Skandi Recife. Deep Explorer also entered service as a diving-support vessel. The wider fleet included flexible-lay and construction vessels, diving and multisupport vessels, and rigid-pipe or heavy-lift vessels used in subsea installation. Manufacturing was another part of the company’s international footprint. Flexible-pipe plants operated in France, Brazil, and Malaysia, while umbilical production facilities were located in several countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Angola, Singapore, Brazil, and Malaysia. A modular manufacturing yard was established at Dahej in Gujarat, India, in 2017. In August 2019, chief executive Doug Pferdehirt announced a plan to create two independent engineering companies. The intended separation would place the former Technip engineering, construction, and technology activities in a new business while retaining the subsea business within TechnipFMC. The process was suspended in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and unstable financial markets. It resumed and was completed in February 2021; the separated company adopted the name Technip Energies. TechnipFMC’s project record has included LNG and floating LNG developments such as Yamal LNG, Prelude FLNG, and Coral South FLNG, together with offshore field projects in Guyana, Norway, Ghana, Australia, India, the Gulf of Mexico, and other markets. The company’s corporate history also contains major compliance events. Technip, before the merger, was fined by French authorities in 2010 over bribery connected with Nigerian LNG contracts. In 2019, TechnipFMC agreed to pay roughly $300 million to resolve allegations concerning bribery in Iraq and Brazil involving predecessor-company activities. These matters remain important context for the group’s governance and compliance history.

Products and positioning

An integrated energy-technology provider focused on subsea systems, offshore project execution, and surface production equipment, with an emphasis on combining engineering, manufacturing, installation, and lifecycle services.

  • Subsea technology

    Subsea production systems

Integrated systems for controlling and producing hydrocarbons on the seabed. The offering can include subsea trees, manifolds, control systems, connection equipment, installation services, and associated project engineering. These systems are designed for offshore field developments and are often delivered together with flexible pipe, umbilicals, and lifecycle support.

  • Subsea infrastructure

    Flexible pipe and umbilicals

Flexible flowlines, risers, and umbilicals connect subsea wells and equipment with floating or fixed offshore facilities. TechnipFMC has designed and manufactured these products for deepwater and demanding offshore environments, supported by production facilities in multiple regions and by installation vessels capable of subsea deployment.

  • Surface equipment

    Surface production systems

Surface equipment includes wellheads, pressure-control systems, and related production technologies used in onshore and offshore wells. These systems support drilling, completion, production, and field operations, and reflect the equipment heritage of FMC Technologies.

  • Engineering and services

    Offshore engineering and installation

Engineering, procurement, construction support, installation, commissioning, and intervention services for offshore developments. Specialized vessels perform flexible-lay, rigid-lay, heavy-lift, diving-support, and subsea-construction tasks. The service is intended to connect equipment design with offshore execution rather than treating each activity as an isolated supply contract.
