Overview
The TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI) is a non-profit foundation based in the Netherlands that works to accelerate research and development of new tuberculosis (TB) vaccines. Founded in 2008, TBVI was created to fill a gap in TB vaccine development caused by a lack of commercial incentives for industry investment. TB is one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases, with more than 10 million people contracting it and over a million dying from it each year, despite the existence of a childhood vaccine, drugs and diagnostics. TBVI argues that improved vaccines for all target groups, capable of protecting against lung disease, would be a game changer for global health and would help reduce the economic burden and the risks of antimicrobial resistance. TBVI does not develop vaccines as a commercial manufacturer. Instead, it identifies, develops and coordinates projects, connects partners around the world, and creates an enabling environment for knowledge-sharing through scientific meetings, publications and formal and informal networking. It also provides technical inputs to make an evidence-based case for TB vaccine R&D to be placed higher on the global agenda and advocates for increased investment. Its work spans preclinical and clinical development of a wide range of vaccine candidates, several of which have reached crucial phases of clinical development. As a Dutch non-profit foundation, TBVI meets the criteria for 'Algemeen Nut Beogende Instellingen' (ANBI), or Public Benefit Organisations, which applies to charity fundraising. It works according to audit standard RJ 650 (RvJ), and its salary policy is based on the CAO of Wageningen University/CAO-DLO. Its accounts are audited annually by Lentink & De Jonge Accountants. TBVI's funders have included the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the European Union, the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Biofabri S.L. and the Gates Foundation. TBVI's strategy focuses on accelerating clinical development while also supporting the design and development of new concepts to diversify the vaccine pipeline. It continues to form strategic partnerships to develop knowledge and tools that critically aid vaccine development, with the ultimate goal of relieving the burden of TB worldwide.
History
TBVI was founded in 2008 to fill the gap in TB vaccine development due to lack of incentives for industry to invest in it. TB is a peculiar disease: it has troubled mankind for thousands of years and even though a childhood vaccine, drugs and diagnostics are available, still today over 10 million people contract the disease yearly and over a million people die of it, more than of any other infectious disease. Improved vaccines, for all target groups, that would protect against lung disease would be a game changer: it would improve health and reduce the economic burden on millions of people as well as the risks of spreading and development of antimicrobial resistance. TBVI has been involved in preclinical and clinical development of a wide range of vaccines and currently several vaccines are in a crucial phase of clinical development. TBVI will continue to support efforts of accelerating clinical development. At the same time, TBVI puts efforts in the design and development of new concepts in the need to diversify the vaccine pipeline as further improvement will be critical to ensure safe, efficacious, and affordable vaccines will be available to achieve the third strategic goal: preventing and stopping TB worldwide. TBVI is involved in each of these 3 goals, but the degree of involvement in each goal is reflected by the colour: the darker, the greater TBVI's involvement. TBVI will continue to form strategic partnerships to develop knowledge and tools critically aiding vaccine development.
