History
Tauw was founded in October 1928 out of a growing need for independent technical advice on water management; its name is an abbreviation of Technisch Adviesbureau van de Unie van Waterschapsbonden. Its first assignments focused mainly on water management, with road construction and electricity soon added to the portfolio. In the years that followed it began monitoring existing drainage installations and took on assignments for municipalities. Post-war reconstruction led to growth, particularly in the construction of pumping stations. Due to the devastating flooding in the coastal areas of the Netherlands, the company's development temporarily halted in 1953. As industrialisation increased, wastewater volumes grew, and in 1954 Tauw established its first laboratory in The Hague. In the late 1960s Tauw expanded and added the title 'ingenieursadviesbureau' (engineering consultancy) to its portfolio, focusing on construction, hydraulic engineering and environmental hygiene. By the end of the 1980s Tauw had grown from 5 employees to more than 125 and continued to grow rapidly, mainly through a significant number of acquisitions. It established itself in Germany, Belgium and France, and later also in Italy and Spain.
