Overview

The Taubensteinhaus is a Category II alpine hut of the Munich section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It sits at 1,576 metres above sea level in the Spitzingsee area of the Schliersee Mountains (Mangfallgebirge) in the Bavarian Prealps, nestled between the Aiplspitz and the Rotwand, with views towards Geitau and the Wendelstein. The hut is generally accessible and catered, and is described by its operator as perhaps the most beautiful viewing lodge in the Spitzing area. It is a popular base for family hikes and more ambitious mountain tours, with numerous summits reachable on easy paths, including the Taubenstein, Hochmiesing, Aiplspitz, Rauhkopf and Lämpersberg. In summer it can be reached on foot from Spitzingsee or Geitau, or more comfortably via the Taubensteinbahn cable car; in winter it is closed. The hut is also a staging point for transitions to neighbouring huts such as the Schönfeldhütte, Rotwandhaus and Albert-Link-Hütte. Built in 1936 by the Wehrmacht as an officers' home above the Spitzingsee, it was long leased by a military-oriented mountaineering club before being taken over in 1965 by the DAV's Bergbund München section. After decades of only minor alterations and limited maintenance, the section put the hut up for sale within the DAV in 2020; the Munich section was the only interested party and officially took it over in February 2022. The hut reopened in June 2022 and remains operated by the Munich section, which acquired it to preserve it for the Alpine Club family. It offers overnight accommodation bookable online, a sun terrace and simple meals, and is staffed by hut manager Sophia Mpalampanis and team. The Taubensteinhaus is a classic example of a DAV self-service mountain hut that serves as a base for hiking, climbing and ski touring in the Bavarian Alps.

History

The Taubensteinhaus was built in 1936 by the Wehrmacht as an officers' home above the Spitzingsee. For a long period it was leased by a military-oriented mountaineering club. In 1965 the Bergbund München section of the German Alpine Club (DAV) took over the house. Over the following decades there were various smaller conversions and extensions, but a major renovation was not possible due to the limited means of the small section. In 2020, during a sale tender within the German Alpine Club, the Munich section was the only interested party. After lengthy negotiations and a search for a tenant, the house was officially taken over by the Munich section in February 2022. The section acquired the hut to preserve it for the Alpine Club family, and ownership passed to the Munich section. Since June 2022 the hut has been open again. It is operated as a Category II hut and remains a base for hikers, climbers and ski tourers in the Spitzingsee area.
