Overview

Tanur Municipality is an urban local government body located in the Tirur Taluk of Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It was formed as a Grama Panchayat in 1950, later divided into Tanur Nagar Panchayat and Tanur Grama Panchayat, and merged again in 1964 to form Tanur Panchayat. On 1 November 2015, it was upgraded to municipality status. The municipality covers an area of 19.49 square kilometres and comprises 44 wards. It is bordered by Nannambra and Ozhur panchayats to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, Tanallur and Ozhur panchayats to the south, and Parappanangadi Municipality to the north. The name Tanur is believed to derive from 'Thanniyur' (town of Thanni trees) or from 'Tanuram' (whirlpool in Sanskrit). Historically, Tanur had colonial connections with the French and Portuguese, and was a commercial centre exporting coconut. The municipality provides various citizen services through the K-Smart platform, including birth, death, and marriage certificates, building permits, property tax, and trade licenses. It also implements welfare schemes and participates in national programs like Swachh Survekshan. The administrative leadership includes a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary.

History

Tanur's history as a local administrative unit began in 1950 when Tanur Grama Panchayat was formed by government order. It was later divided into two panchayats: Tanur Nagar Panchayat and Tanur Grama Panchayat. In 1964, these two were merged again to form Tanur Panchayat. The region has a rich historical background. The name Tanur is thought to derive from 'Thanniyur', meaning 'town with Thanni trees', or from 'Tanuram', the Sanskrit word for whirlpool, referring to the many whirlpools in the rivers that once flowed through the area. During the reign of local kings, the headquarters was at Rajaraja Mangalam, now known as Rayiramangalam, and the place where buttermilk was supplied to the royal family is known as present-day Morya. The French had a colony on the coast of Tanur, known as French Chappa, which was a commercial centre of about 5 acres and exported large amounts of coconut. This area remained French territory for some time after Indian independence and was later taken over by the Kerala government. The Portuguese also had a colony in Tanur, and Tanur is mentioned in the Portuguese novel 'Lusiad'. On 1 November 2015, Tanur was upgraded from a panchayat to a municipality. According to the Malayalam Wikipedia, the municipality covers 19.49 square kilometres and has 44 wards. It is situated in Tirur Taluk of Malappuram district. The municipality is bordered by Nannambra and Ozhur panchayats to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, Tanallur and Ozhur panchayats to the south, and Parappanangadi Municipality to the north.
