Overview

TANSUYA (たんす屋) is a Japanese company engaged in the purchase and sale of reused kimonos, obi, and Japanese traditional accessories. It operates under the "TANSUYA" trade name and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Maruyama Kyosai Group. The company was established in 2020 as a successor to Tokyo Yamaki, a kimono retailer that filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. TANSUYA took over Tokyo Yamaki's reused kimono sales and purchase business, including 43 stores, on September 1, 2020. The company is headquartered in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the group headquarters of its parent company, Maruyama Kyosai Group. It holds a secondhand dealer license issued by the Kanagawa Prefectural Public Safety Commission. TANSUYA operates approximately 40 stores, primarily in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and also sells through its official online store. Its business model focuses on offering high-quality reused kimonos at reasonable prices, making kimono culture accessible to beginners and enthusiasts alike. TANSUYA's services include purchasing kimonos and obi from customers, cleaning and processing them (washing, antibacterial treatment, pressing), and reselling them. The company also provides kimono dressing lessons and coordination consultations at many of its stores. Through its reuse business, TANSUYA aims to pass on Japan's traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and promote a culture of valuing and reusing material goods. As a subsidiary of Maruyama Kyosai Group, TANSUYA benefits from the group's resources and retail expertise. The company continues to expand its presence in the reused kimono market, catering to both domestic customers and international visitors interested in Japanese traditional attire.

History

TANSUYA CO.,Ltd. was established on July 22, 2020, by the Maruyama Kyosai Group as a vehicle to acquire the reused kimono business of Tokyo Yamaki. Tokyo Yamaki, which operated under the "TANSUYA" trade name, had filed for civil rehabilitation proceedings with the Tokyo District Court on April 20, 2020, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and received a commencement order on May 11, 2020. Initially, Tokyo Yamaki had signed a basic agreement with Yamano Holdings to transfer its business to Yamano Holdings as the civil rehabilitation sponsor. However, the Maruyama Kyosai Group presented a higher offer, leading Yamano Holdings to terminate negotiations with Tokyo Yamaki on June 30, 2020. On July 2, 2020, the Maruyama Kyosai Group obtained first priority negotiation rights as the civil rehabilitation sponsor. After discussions on the rehabilitation scheme, on August 19, 2020, the two companies agreed to transfer the reused kimono sales and purchase business to TANSUYA CO.,Ltd., which had been established by the Maruyama Kyosai Group on July 22, 2020, effective September 1, 2020. On September 1, 2020, TANSUYA took over the reused kimono sales and purchase business and 43 stores from Tokyo Yamaki. The headquarters was placed in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the same location as the group headquarters of its parent company, Maruyama Kyosai Group. The company also newly obtained a secondhand dealer license from the Kanagawa Prefectural Public Safety Commission, which has jurisdiction over Kawasaki City. On April 15, 2022, the registered head office was relocated to Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki City. As of the latest available information, TANSUYA operates approximately 40 stores, mainly in Tokyo, and continues to provide reused kimono sales, purchase services, and kimono-related workshops.
