Overview
Tango Gameworks was a Japanese video game development studio established in Tokyo in March 2010 by Shinji Mikami, the Capcom veteran best known for creating the Resident Evil series. The studio was formed with an ambition to give experienced developers a relatively independent environment in which to make large-scale games across horror, action, and other genres. Its early plans included an original science-fiction project known as Noah, but financial difficulties soon led to the studio being acquired by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, in October 2010. Tango was subsequently integrated into ZeniMax's Asia-Pacific operations while continuing to operate as a distinct creative development team. The acquisition provided the resources for Tango to redirect its work toward Zwei, a project that gradually evolved into The Evil Within. Published by Bethesda in 2014, The Evil Within was a survival-horror game directed by Mikami and became Tango's first released major title. Mikami then moved away from directing duties, allowing other members of the studio to lead projects. The Evil Within 2, directed by John Johanas, followed in 2017 and expanded the series' exploration, combat, and semi-open environments while retaining its psychological-horror foundation. Tango later broadened its creative range beyond conventional survival horror. Ghostwire: Tokyo, announced in 2019 and released in 2022, combined supernatural action, exploration, and Japanese folklore in a contemporary Tokyo setting. The game was led initially by creative director Ikumi Nakamura, who left the studio in 2019, and was completed under subsequent leadership. In 2022 Tango also released Hero Dice, a mobile title that was discontinued several months later. In January 2023 the studio unexpectedly announced and released Hi-Fi Rush on the same day. Its rhythm-based combat, animated presentation, and music-driven progression earned strong critical and player reception and demonstrated that Tango could successfully work outside its established horror identity. ZeniMax Media was acquired by Microsoft in March 2021 for US$7.5 billion, bringing Tango into Microsoft Gaming and making it Microsoft's first Japan-based game development studio. Microsoft announced plans to close Tango in May 2024, and the studio ceased operations on 14 June 2024. The decision attracted substantial criticism, particularly because of Hi-Fi Rush's critical success. In August 2024, South Korean publisher Krafton announced an agreement to acquire Tango from Microsoft. The transaction, effective 1 August, brought approximately 50 former employees into the new operation and included the rights to Hi-Fi Rush; rights to The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo remained with Microsoft. Tango announced in January 2025 that it had been incorporated as Tango Gameworks Inc. as part of its formal integration into Krafton. In June 2025 it presented a refreshed brand identity emphasizing a creative-workshop model and a handmade feel in game production. The rebuilt studio is therefore associated with Krafton while maintaining a strategic relationship with Microsoft, particularly around Hi-Fi Rush and the transition of the team.
History
Tango Gameworks was founded in Tokyo on 1 March 2010 by Shinji Mikami, who had spent much of his career at Capcom and had created or directed important entries in the Resident Evil franchise. Mikami wanted a development environment that could support ambitious projects while remaining more independent than a large publisher structure. The founding team initially numbered approximately twelve developers, and additional staff with experience at PlatinumGames, Capcom, and Grasshopper Manufacture joined during the studio's first year. The studio began exploring several concepts, including a science-fiction open-world survival-adventure project called Noah. Development soon ran into financial trouble. Bethesda Softworks provided assistance, and ZeniMax Media announced its acquisition of Tango in October 2010. Tango was folded into ZeniMax Asia K.K., but continued as a recognizable creative unit in Tokyo. The transaction allowed the studio to move away from Noah and begin work on Zwei, a project that was formally announced in 2012. Zwei's concept changed substantially during production and was eventually revealed as The Evil Within, a single-player survival-horror game directed by Mikami. Bethesda released it in October 2014. After The Evil Within, Mikami stepped back from directing so that other Tango developers could take leading creative roles. The studio expanded The Evil Within concept with The Evil Within 2, announced in 2017 and released later that year. Tango also began working on projects that did not fit neatly into traditional survival horror. Ghostwire: Tokyo was announced at Bethesda's 2019 E3 presentation as an action-adventure game with supernatural and horror elements. The project used modern Tokyo and Japanese folklore as major components. Ikumi Nakamura, initially its creative director, left Tango in September 2019, after which development continued under new leadership. Ghostwire: Tokyo was released in 2022. Tango's 2022 mobile release Hero Dice had a short operating life and was discontinued five months after launch. The studio's most notable departure from horror was Hi-Fi Rush, a rhythm-based action game announced and released on 25 January 2023 during an Xbox and Bethesda Developer_Direct event. Its music-synchronized combat, colorful animation, and compact presentation received strong critical attention and broadened public understanding of Tango's capabilities. Around the same period, Bethesda announced that Mikami would leave the company; he subsequently founded another studio, Kamuy. Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021 placed Tango within Microsoft Gaming and made it the company's first Japanese development studio. In May 2024 Microsoft announced that Tango would close along with several other studios. The closure took effect on 14 June 2024 and was widely criticized because Hi-Fi Rush had been well received. The studio's subsequent history changed quickly: Krafton announced in August 2024 that it had acquired Tango from Microsoft in an agreement effective 1 August. The transaction brought around half of the former staff back into the operation and included Hi-Fi Rush, while Microsoft retained The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Microsoft and Krafton also described a strategic partnership intended to support the transition and future Hi-Fi Rush work. Tango announced its formal incorporation into Krafton in January 2025. In June 2025, it unveiled an updated identity centered on the idea of a creative workshop and on the handmade character of its games. As a result, the post-2024 Tango is a Krafton-owned studio with a smaller revived team and a continuing strategic relationship with Microsoft.

The Evil Within
Tango's debut major title, directed by Shinji Mikami and published by Bethesda in 2014. It follows detective Sebastian Castellanos through a hostile psychological nightmare combining resource management, stealth, combat, and grotesque horror imagery. The Evil Within 2
Released in 2017, the sequel continues Sebastian Castellanos's story while giving players larger areas to explore and more flexibility in approaching encounters. It retains the series' psychological-horror themes but adds broader environmental exploration, crafting, and multiple routes through parts of the game. The project marked Tango's continued development of its flagship horror property after Mikami moved away from directing.
