Overview
Tampering (Tampering ry) is a Finnish contemporary music association founded in 2013 by young composition students in Tampere. Its stated purpose is to advocate for young composers and musicians and to advance the position of contemporary music in Tampere and across Finland. The association provides composers with opportunities to have their works performed, musicians with opportunities to play these works, and audiences with opportunities to hear interesting new music. Tampering has organised numerous orchestra concerts, chamber music concerts, recitals, and profile concerts in Tampere, and since 2014 it has run the Tampering Festival. Alongside its concerts, the association regularly organises calls for works. An ensemble specialising in new music, Tampering Ensemble, also operates in connection with the association. The founding members were Cecilia Damström, Matilda Seppälä, Timo Kittilä, and Henri Sokka. The association collaborates with other Finnish contemporary music organisations; for example, in 2020 it joined forces with the Turku-based What ever Works! ry for the concert series "WeW! x Tampering: Välillä – uutta musiikkia jousisoittimille" ("In Between – new music for string instruments"), held at the Sibelius Museum in Turku and at Kulttuuritalo Laikku in Tampere. The programme featured four string quartets and two solo cello works by composers from both associations, performed by cellist Teemu Mastovaara, violinists Katriina Rainio and Aino Torii, and violist Matilda Berghäll. As a registered association, Tampering is a non-profit entity rather than a commercial company, but it operates as a brand in the Finnish contemporary music scene, presenting concerts and a festival under its name.
History
Tampering ry was founded in 2013 by young composition students in Tampere: Cecilia Damström, Matilda Seppälä, Timo Kittilä, and Henri Sokka. The association was established to advocate for young composers and musicians and to improve the standing of contemporary music in Tampere and throughout Finland. It provides a platform for composers to have their works performed, for musicians to perform them, and for audiences to hear new music. Since its founding, Tampering has organised a variety of concerts in Tampere, including orchestra concerts, chamber music concerts, recitals, and profile concerts. In 2014, the association launched the Tampering Festival, which has become a recurring event. Alongside its concert activities, Tampering regularly issues calls for works, inviting composers to submit pieces for performance. An ensemble specialising in new music, Tampering Ensemble, operates in connection with the association. In 2020, Tampering collaborated with the Turku-based contemporary music association What ever Works! ry to present the concert series "WeW! x Tampering: Välillä – uutta musiikkia jousisoittimille" ("In Between – new music for string instruments"). The concerts took place on 15 September at the Sibelius Museum in Turku and on 23 September at Kulttuuritalo Laikku in Tampere. The programme included four string quartets and two solo cello works, half by composers from each association. From WeW!, works included Asta Hyvärinen's "Just before the End" (premiered in Turku), Lauri Mäntysaari's solo cello piece "Kimara" (which had been a compulsory piece at the Turku Cello Competition), and Leevi Räsänen's "Salva". From Tampering, the selected works were Niki Main's "Soar", Eelis Uusivirta's "Hetkien välissä" (premiered in Turku), and Adam Vilagi's "The Dark Train" for solo cello. The performers were cellist Teemu Mastovaara, violinists Katriina Rainio and Aino Torii, and violist Matilda Berghäll. The concert duration was about one hour without an interval. The collaboration was described as building new cooperation between the Turku and Tampere contemporary music associations and offering audiences current local contemporary music experiences. The name "Välillä" ("In Between") was intended to bridge the geographical gap and underline the significance of contemporary art music as a meeting place for many genres and influences.
