Overview
TALIS Management Holding, also known as the TALIS Group, was a German industrial holding company established on 1 October 2010 and headquartered in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Baden-Württemberg. It was created as a platform for premium valves, hydrants and other solutions for water flow control, bringing together a portfolio of established European brands. At its height the group comprised around nine to ten brands operating in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Israel and the United Kingdom, and employed roughly 1,450 people across nine countries, of whom about 500 were in Germany. In the 2018 financial year the group generated revenue of more than 222 million euros, although it also reported a net debt of 337.8 million euros and a consolidated loss of 34.91 million euros. The group's brand portfolio included Atlantic Plastics, Bayard, Belgicast, Erhard, Frischhut, Schmieding, Strate, Unijoint and Wafrega, with Raphael Valves added through acquisition in 2011. These brands manufactured and sold a wide range of water-cycle products: fire hydrants, butterfly valves, gate valves, automatic control valves, fittings and related waterworks equipment. Bayard, founded in 1880 in Lyon, was the group's largest brand by revenue, while Belgicast of Spain was known for innovations such as the Multamed gate valve and for serving desalination and district cooling markets. Erhard, founded in 1871, and Schmieding, founded in 1874, were long-established German water fittings makers. TALIS was owned by the private equity firm Triton Partners. The group's history was marked by both growth and controversy: German competition authorities identified Erhard, Frischhut and Schmieding as participants in a hydrant cartel that held around 70 percent of the German market and engaged in illegal price fixing. Erhard cooperated with the investigation, and cartel proceedings opened in 2011. From 2022, Triton Partners began to dissolve the TALIS Group through a series of divestments. On 9 October 2023, the AVK Group took full ownership of BAYARD SAS and BELGICAST International, S.L. and their respective subsidiaries, completing the dissolution of the TALIS Group. The former TALIS brand websites now redirect to AVK Group properties, and Bayard and Belgicast continue under AVK ownership.
History
TALIS Management Holding was founded on 1 October 2010 as a German industrial group focused on water flow control technology. From the outset it brought together a set of established brands: Atlantic Plastics, Bayard, Belgicast, Erhard, Frischhut, Schmieding, Strate, Unijoint and Wafrega. The group was owned by the private equity firm Triton Partners and headquartered in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Baden-Württemberg. In 2011 it acquired Raphael Valves, an Israeli manufacturer of hydraulic control valves founded in 1949. In 2015 TALIS divested its Wafrega brand. The group's brands had deep historical roots. Bayard was founded in 1880 in a small workshop in Lyon, initially making valves for boilers and wine barrels before expanding into agricultural irrigation, construction, drinking water and wastewater, as well as fire protection and pipeline protection systems; it became the group's largest brand by revenue, based in Meyzieu, France. Belgicast began in 1957 in Spain producing gate valves, check valves, ring piston valves and butterfly valves for the marine sector, later diversifying into the water market and becoming known for innovations such as the Multamed gate valve, with headquarters in Munguia near Bilbao. Erhard was founded in 1871 by Johannes Erhard in Heidenheim, starting with brass water taps and growing into a global water fittings company. Frischhut was founded in 1945 by Ludwig Frischhut in Pfarrkirchen, Bavaria, and later established its own foundry for canal casting fittings. Schmieding was founded in 1874 in Dortmund by Ernst Schmieding during the rapid expansion of Ruhr mining and industry. Atlantic Plastics was assembled by Tyco International in the early 1990s from several UK companies and joined TALIS in 2011. At its height, TALIS employed around 1,450 people in nine countries, about 500 of them in Germany, and operated in Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Israel and the United Kingdom. In the 2018 financial year the group reported revenue of over 222 million euros, net debt of 337.8 million euros and a consolidated loss of 34.91 million euros. The group's history was also marked by a major antitrust case. According to the German cartel office, Erhard, Frischhut and Schmieding, together with other manufacturers of hydrants and water fittings, formed a cartel with a 70 percent market share in Germany. The cartel engaged in illegal price fixing over a long period, significantly harming competition. Erhard cooperated with the investigation, and cartel proceedings were opened in 2011. From 2022, Triton Partners began to dissolve the TALIS Group through successive divestments. On 9 October 2023, the AVK Group took full ownership of BAYARD SAS and BELGICAST International, S.L. and their respective subsidiaries, leading to the complete dissolution of the TALIS Group. The former TALIS brand websites now direct visitors to the Bayard and Belgicast sites under AVK Group ownership.
